Two familiar Star Trek characters are set to appear in the final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+. Actor Thomas Jane, known for his role in The Expanse, will play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy from the Original Series.

Alongside him, newcomer Kai Murakami will take on the role of Hikaru Sulu. Both actors are expected to appear in the last episode of the fifth season, which recently finished filming.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is part of the expanded Star Trek universe created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet.

The series follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise during the 23rd century, about a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series. It is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery and premiered on Paramount+ in May 2022.

The main cast includes Anson Mount as Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. These actors first appeared in Discovery and were brought back for the spin-off following positive fan responses. Other cast members include Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Martin Quinn, with some playing younger versions of characters from the Original Series.

Produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Secret Hideout, Weed Road Pictures, H M R X Productions, and Roddenberry Entertainment, the show is filmed at CBS Stages Canada in Mississauga, Ontario. The creators opted for episodic storytelling, returning to the style of the Original Series rather than the serialized approach used in Discovery.

Strange New Worlds has released several seasons to date. The first season ran from May to July 2022, the second season aired in 2023, and the third season ran in 2025. The fourth season is expected in 2026, and the fifth will be the final season with a shorter six-episode order. The series has been praised for its episodic structure, strong performances, and faithful approach to Star Trek storytelling.

It has also received two Primetime Creative Arts Emmy nominations and won two Saturn Awards.
