Timothée Chalamet Breaks Oscar Records With Historic New Nomination
Timothée Chalamet is making headlines in Hollywood once again. The actor has just earned his third nomination for best actor at the Academy Awards, according to the official 98th Oscars announcement. This latest nod is for his role as a ping pong prodigy named Marty Mauser in the sports comedy-drama Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie.
At 30 years old, Chalamet has now set a new record. He is the youngest male actor ever to receive three lead acting nominations at the Oscars. His first nomination came when he was just 22 for Call Me by Your Name, making him one of the youngest nominees in history. He also received a nomination for the 2024 film A Complete Unknown.
This year, Chalamet faces some tough competition in the best actor category. He is up against Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.
Marty Supreme has also earned a nomination for best picture. Because Chalamet is one of the producers of the film, he received a nomination in that category as well. At 30 years and 26 days old, he is now the youngest person ever to be nominated for both acting and producing in the same year. A source confirmed that this breaks a record previously held by Warren Beatty for 58 years, who was over 30 years and 10 months old when he achieved it for Bonnie and Clyde in 1967.
Chalamet has been on a winning streak leading up to the Oscars. On January 11, he won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical, becoming the youngest winner in that category. He also took home the best actor prize at The Actor Awards last year for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, making him the youngest recipient in that award’s history.
If he wins the Oscar this March, Chalamet would make history again. He would become the second-youngest best actor winner ever, just behind Adrien Brody, who was 29 when he won for The Pianist in 2002. He would also become the sixth-youngest male acting winner across all categories, joining names like Timothy Hutton and Heath Ledger.
Voting for the Oscars will take place between February 26 and March 5, and the ceremony is scheduled for March 15 on ABC with Conan O’Brien hosting.
Chalamet has been one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for several years. He first gained fame for his performance in Call Me by Your Name, which helped him break onto the A-list. Since then, he has balanced smaller artistic films with major blockbusters, including playing Paul Atreides in the Dune franchise and showing his singing and dancing skills in Wonka.
Marty Supreme is a departure from his usual roles, showing him as a different kind of leading man. The film is produced by A24, known for its critically acclaimed projects, and tells a fictionalized story inspired by a real-life ping pong champion.
Chalamet is also growing his career as a producer, giving him more control over the stories he wants to tell. This is a move many Hollywood stars, including Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, have used to stay influential in the industry.
