Timothée Chalamet Makes History as The First Person on Top of Las Vegas’ Iconic Sphere
The promotion for the upcoming film Marty Supreme has reached a spectacular new level. Even though the movie doesn’t hit U.S. theaters until December 25, it has already made a splash at the box office with limited previews, earning $875,000 from just six theaters.
That per-theater average of $145,933 is the best for A24 and the highest seen since La La Land in 2016, according to box office reports.
But the team behind Marty Supreme isn’t stopping there. In a bold marketing move, the Las Vegas Sphere has been transformed into a giant ping-pong ball to celebrate the film’s table tennis theme. As part of the stunt, Timothée Chalamet became the first person ever to appear on top of the Sphere, drawing widespread attention online and in the media.

Marty Supreme is a American sports comedy-drama directed and produced by Josh Safdie, who co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein. The story is loosely inspired by the life of legendary American table tennis player Marty Reisman. Chalamet stars as the young table tennis prodigy Marty Mauser and also serves as a co-producer. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher in supporting roles.
The film premiered at the 2025 New York Film Festival on October 6 and has already earned critical acclaim. Many reviewers have praised the direction, screenplay, score, and editing, while Chalamet’s performance has been highlighted as a career-defining role. Marty Supreme has even been named one of the top ten films of 2025 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and it has received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Actor for Chalamet.
Set in 1950s New York City, Marty Supreme follows Mauser as he navigates the highs and lows of competitive table tennis, balancing personal ambition with the pressures of fame. The Las Vegas Sphere promo cleverly ties into the film’s table tennis storyline, giving fans an eye-catching preview of the movie’s quirky, high-energy vibe.
Early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% approval rating from 128 critics, and Metacritic gives the film a score of 91 out of 100, indicating “universal acclaim.” Critics have singled out Chalamet’s performance as “one of the most colossal movie performances of the 21st century,” with IndieWire calling it a career-defining turn, and BBC describing the film as “fresh, funny, and exhilarating” largely because of his presence.
With its unique promotional campaign and record-breaking preview performance, Marty Supreme is generating major buzz ahead of its full release. The Las Vegas Sphere stunt in particular has captured public imagination, making Chalamet and the film impossible to ignore as the holidays approach.
