The third film will wrap up Villeneuve’s vision of Frank Herbert’s Dune saga, this time drawing from the author’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah.
The director is once again teaming up with screenwriter Jon Spaihts for the script. Production officially started in July at Origo Film Studios in Budapest, with additional filming confirmed for later in the year in Liwa Oasis, Abu Dhabi.
Villeneuve is making a big change for this installment by shooting the film on traditional film stock instead of digital. Some scenes are being captured using IMAX cameras, marking the first time since his 2010 film Incendies that Villeneuve has chosen this method. The shift is seen as both a creative and technical step forward for the filmmaker.
The returning cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Robert Pattinson is joining the cast in a new role that has yet to be revealed.
Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that Dune: Part 3 will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026. The film is expected to pick up after the dramatic events of Dune: Part Two, exploring the political and personal challenges Paul faces as he continues his journey.
It’s exciting to see Villeneuve pushing boundaries again, both visually and narratively. Shooting on film could give Dune: Part 3 a different texture and feel, adding even more depth to its world.
