Timothée Chalamet recently shared a hilarious story about Matthew McConaughey during a Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas at Austin on February 21. The two actors, who first worked together on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar over a decade ago, proved that their bond has only grown stronger, and funnier over the years.

Chalamet recalled a particularly shocking prank from his final day on set. “I went into my trailer and there was a huge turd in my toilet. I felt so disrespected,” he told the live audience. At first, he thought the production crew was responsible. “I went around to all the grips, these big guys, and I said, ‘Hey, one of you let it loose in my trailer.’ They said no,” he said.

It wasn’t until Chalamet approached Nolan that the mystery was solved. “I went up to Nolan, and he pointed to Matthew, and Matthew had this devilish grin on his face,” Chalamet recounted. When asked why, McConaughey offered a classic cryptic explanation: “In Texas, it’s a coming of age, baby.” True to his signature style, McConaughey called the prank a “souvenir.”

The story had the audience laughing and highlighted McConaughey’s playful energy, even on a serious film set. Despite the prank, Chalamet and McConaughey have maintained a close relationship, with Chalamet often looking up to his former co-star for guidance.

Both actors have had big careers since Interstellar. Chalamet is celebrating his third Oscar nomination for Marty Supreme, a sports drama released in late 2025. Fans are also eagerly awaiting Dune: Part Three, scheduled for December 18, where he will reprise his role as Paul Atreides alongside Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Robert Pattinson.

McConaughey has also been busy. His crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, co-starring Kurt Russell and Cole Sprouse, is set for release on August 21, and has received near-perfect reviews. He recently wrapped Apple TV+’s The Lost Bus with America Ferrera, while continuing his work as a professor and cultural ambassador at the University of Texas.

That decade-old trailer surprise may have shocked Chalamet, but it also became a story that fans will never forget. Their recent reunion in Austin was a reminder that Hollywood friendships can survive even the strangest “coming of age” moments.
