Todd Howard Breaks Silence on Potential ‘Elder Scrolls’ Show
Todd Howard is starting to open up about the idea of an Elder Scrolls TV show, and people are paying attention.
After the Amazon Fallout series became a huge hit, fans began asking whether Bethesda’s famous fantasy world could be next. In a new chat with Eurogamer, Howard didn’t give a clear yes or no, but he did explain why Fallout made more sense as a first step into television.
Eurogamer spoke with Howard while Season 2 of the Fallout show was getting ready to launch. When the topic of an Elder Scrolls series came up, he explained that Fallout had been in the works for a long time.
He said, “I will say this, the Fallout journey was like a 10 year one. After Fallout 3, people were asking to do a movie or show for Fallout, and we really took our time.” According to Eurogamer, Howard said he “can’t rule in or rule out an Elder Scrolls thing in the future,” but he also felt Fallout was “more uniquely suited” for TV and had “more to say in its genre.”
Howard admitted the success of the Fallout show made him think about what else might work on screen. He said, “But, you never know. I think the impact of the show on Fallout as a franchise has been bigger than I expected, so it does make you think like, ‘Hey, is there a path?’ But, nothing today… [and] I’m willing to say ‘no’ for a decade.” For now, it seems he’s not rushing into anything.
The series isn’t slowing down either. Season 3 is already confirmed, and the cast seems ready to continue for years. In May, Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, told IGN that the story has a long plan.
He said, “When I signed on to do the series, we would have a starting point and they gave me the endpoint… it is Season 5, 6 type of endpoint.” He explained that the team always expected the character journeys to unfold slowly.
With Fallout having such a long future on TV, it might be a while before Bethesda seriously considers an Elder Scrolls adaptation. Maybe once Fallout finishes its planned run, the studio will look toward Tamriel. By then, fans hope Elder Scrolls 6 will finally be out too.
