The movie will once again be led by Yamazaki Takashi, who will write, direct, and supervise the visual effects. The VFX will be handled by Shirogumi, with production by Toho Studios and Robot, the same team that worked on 2023’s hit film “Godzilla Minus One.” Toho Co., Ltd. will both produce and distribute the new movie. Fans may remember that a new “Godzilla” project was first teased about a year ago, and now it’s finally official.
“Godzilla Minus One” became a massive success when it came out in November 2023. It earned over JPY7.65 billion (around $50 million) in Japan, making it the most successful live-action Japanese “Godzilla” movie ever made.
In North America, it grossed $56 million, becoming the highest-earning Japanese-language live-action film in history. The movie also went on to make history at the 96th Academy Awards by winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects — the first “Godzilla” film ever nominated for an Academy Award and the first Japanese film to win in that category.
“Godzilla Minus One” was set in post-World War II Japan and followed Shikishima Koichi, played by Kamiki Ryunosuke, a former kamikaze pilot haunted by his past and his terrifying encounter with Godzilla. When the monster reappears, he and a group of soldiers try to stop it before it destroys Japan. The movie also starred Hamabe Minami, Yamada Yuki, Aoki Munetaka, Yoshioka Hidetaka, Ando Sakura, and Sasaki Kuranosuke.
With the new film “Godzilla -0.0,” Toho seems to be continuing the story that started in “Minus One.” The title suggests a kind of reset or new beginning for the series. There are no details yet about the plot or release date, but fans are already excited to see what comes next for the King of the Monsters.
