Visitors to Tokyo DisneySea got an unexpected scare when a pair of crows began tearing at the hair of the Rapunzel animatronic during the Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival ride. The ride, which is inspired by Disney’s Tangled and opened in Fantasy Springs in June 2024, usually offers a romantic boat journey through the story of Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder.

In a video circulating online, two large black crows can be seen pecking at Rapunzel’s long golden hair, pulling out large chunks while the animatronic continues to sway and sing from her tower window. Some onlookers were clearly horrified by the scene, which looked like Rapunzel was getting “scalped” by the birds.

I can only assume the crows were taking such generous tufts of precious Disney Princess hair to build their nest with, the source joked, adding that it was “kind of sweet if you ignore the otherwise gory scene.”

The animatronic is part of Disney’s advanced audio-animatronic lineup, known for realistic movement, fluidity, and engagement with guests. Unfortunately for Rapunzel, her “bad hair day” is part of a recent trend of animatronic mishaps. For example, at Disneyland Paris, the walking, talking Olaf animatronic abruptly stopped functioning and fell to the ground, losing his carrot nose in the process. That incident also went viral online.

Fans of Disney and theme park enthusiasts were quick to share reactions to the bizarre Rapunzel incident, showing that even in a controlled theme park environment, nature can still create chaos.
