‘Tokyo Vice’ introduced us to a plethora of interesting characters connected to Tokyo’s Yakuza scene. From models, reporters, and businessmen, there are plenty of people from all walks of life, so it didn’t surprise us when we found out that there are also plenty of cops working for Tozawa as well and exploiting their position. Once you start dealing with Yakuza, you’re either going to thrive or you’re going to swim with the fish it’s only a matter of time and Miyamoto unfortunately met his end sooner rather than later. Here are 5 most important things to know about him.

1. Miyamoto abused his Yakuza connections to boos his career

Back when we first met Miyamoto we had no idea that he was in cahoots with the Tozawa clan. He seemed to be quite a capable cop who had plenty of insight and plenty of instincts on how to do his job related to vices and more often than not his raids were successful. As it turns out Miyamoto was nowhere near as capable as he was presenting himself, he was working for Tozawa the whole with the Yakuza boss feeding him minor information to keep the police off his trail when it comes to more serious stuff. This worked quite well for Jin, as over the course of his career he rose to the ranks.

What tipped us off however long before we knew about his involvement with Tozawa was his attitude toward Jake and reporters in general. Jin is generally regarded as one of the most disliked characters in the series.

2. Miyamoto was the one who ruined Jake’s reputation with the police

We know how hard Jake worked to be taken seriously by the police and how much danger he exposed himself to for most of his leads to lead absolutely nowhere. Well at one point Jake received a tip about a huge drug deal that was going to take place and Jake barely managed to talk the police into exploring it further. On the day of the raid, the drugs were nowhere to be seen on site and Jake’s reputation was once again ruined due to wasting police resources on bogus tips.

As it turned out Jin was the one to hide the drugs, all in the efforts of assisting the Tozawa clan.

3. Katagiri was the first to become suspicious about where Jin’s loyalties actually lie

Following the bogus raid and the missing drugs, Katagiri became suspicious of Jin’s true intentions. Katagiri devised a perfect trap for him in collaboration with his superiors are the vice department. He told Jin that he had enough evidence to bring Tozawa to court and told him that it could be found in the evidence room. Jin took the bait and promptly waited for the first opportunity to destroy the evidence, unaware that he was going into the trap. Catching Jin attempting to tamper with the evidence was like shining a light on a rat.

4. Miyamoto eventually had a change of heart

Knowing that he was caught, Miyamoto attempted to get himself out that situation by any means necessary. Katagiri offered him a deal, a chance to do some good for a change. It was a deal that Miyamoto could use to his advantage, his reputation and career would remain intact, and Tozawa never had to find out (at least not before he was behind bars) that Miyamoto had fallen.

Miyamoto decided to start working his actual job and help the police with catching Tozawa. He was supposed to feed the police with actual information while feeding Tozawa bogus information related to police activities. Things were going okay for a while until Miyamoto said something stupid, he implied that Katagiri was a corrupt cop which Tozawa knew was impossible, this is what tipped him off he started working with the police and there’s something going on behind his back.

5. Miyamoto was killed in a hotel room

Lastly, we won’t see Miyamoto in future episodes of ‘Tokyo Vice’ because he is dead. Tozawa at one point confronted Katagiri regarding the detective’s “little” operation against him and told him that his family would be in danger if he continued to pursue evidence against him. Not long after that, Katagiri receives an anonymous envelope that contains a matchbook with a hotel room number on it with Jin’s name.

In the room, Katagiri finds Miyamoto, dead with needles protruding from his arm as Tozawa staged the scene to look like Miyamoto overdosed on heroin, there’s also a photograph at the crime scene that proves that Katagiri and Jin worked against Tozawa. Back at the station, Katagiri receives cease and desist orders to abandon the investigation completely and Katagiri is forced to admit that he and Jin worked on a secret operation together to bring Tozawa down. The media however staged Miyamoto’s death as an accident not to paint the Vice department in bad light.
