‘Tokyo Vice’ introduced us to a plethora of interesting characters connected to Tokyo’s Yakuza scene. From models, reporters, and businessmen, there are plenty of people from all walks of life, but the most interesting characters by far are the ones that aren’t connected to the Yakuza directly but have the benefit of being on their side. One character we’re going to introduce today is Baku, Jake’s boss at Meicho.

1. Baku is a stickler for rules

As the Editor-In-Chief, Baku holds a position of authority and influence at the newspaper where Jake works. Baku is a real stickler for rules and doing everything by the books, which is quite ironic, and his style of management more often than not clashes with Jake’s investigative pursuits. But, Jake is not the only one who frequently clashes with Baku, as he seemingly has a problem with all staffers. But, this is likely to change in the coming episodes.

2. Baku has connections to right-wing nationalist groups

Baku is known to be racist, which is one of the reasons that he is hounding Jake all that much, this is why Baku sometimes gives more attention and credence to such content as well. In the fifth episode of season 2, it was discovered that Baku is a member of some right-wing racist groups that Tozawa is directly financing, which might be the primary reason why he does his damn best to keep the reporting of their activities at the minimum.

3. Baku destroyed the Yoshino tape

In the same episode since it was revealed that Baku was on Tozawa’s payroll, this served as the primary evidence that Baku was the one to stage the A/V room fire which destroyed the Yoshino tape. Eimi was already suspicious about Baku, due to numerous small things, but this connection revealed that Baku was the insider that Tozawa had in the papers. As a reminder, the Yoshino tape showed a connection between Tozawa and some serious crimes connected to human trafficking and prostitution, it’s also the tape that revealed the ultimate fate of Polina, Samantha’s dear friend.

4. The fact that Baku nagged Jake all that much made him a better reporter

Baku’s insufferable attitude, the fact that he was racist toward Jake, and his “challenges” all led to Jake’s investigative pursuits becoming better and better with time. Baku is likely unaware that Jake, Eimi, and Tin-Tin just might be his downfall.
