Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas Dive Into Danger as Doug Liman’s ‘Deeper’ Gets a Massive Production Update

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are getting ready to team up again, this time for a movie called Deeper. According to multiple reports, filming is set to begin this August, and Cruise will star alongside Ana de Armas. The film is being made by Warner Bros., and it’s expected to have a huge budget, reportedly around $200 million, according to Deadline.
Deeper has been in the works for years. The original script was written by Max Landis and first got attention back in 2016. Since then, a lot of big names have been connected to the project. At one point, Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba, and Gal Gadot were linked to it. Directors like Kornél Mundruczó and Baltasar Kormákur were also attached at different times, but nothing ever got off the ground.
Now, the film is finally moving forward with Cruise in the lead role. He’ll play a disgraced astronaut who goes on a deep-sea mission to explore a new ocean trench. But once he gets down there, things take a dark turn.
He discovers a strange and dangerous force waiting in the depths. Liman has described the movie as a supernatural thriller. He recently told Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman that he’s excited to do something scary. “I have never done one,” Liman said. “And neither has Tom.”
Cruise and de Armas have already started dive training to prepare for the shoot. The movie is expected to be Cruise’s next project and could even be released before his upcoming film with Alejandro González Iñárritu, which is scheduled for October 2026.
The script for Deeper was being finalized by Christopher McQuarrie, a frequent Cruise collaborator. According to sources close to the production, the latest draft is now complete and ready for filming.
Even though MGM originally bought the script for a large sum, the studio dropped the project after Max Landis faced several serious allegations. The script was later revised and moved to Warner Bros., where it’s now getting a fresh start with Liman directing and Cruise starring.
This will be the third time Cruise and Liman work together. They previously made Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. They’re also working on another ambitious project that involves filming in outer space with NASA and SpaceX, but that movie is still in the development stage.
Liman is coming off recent success with his Road House remake and the Apple TV+ heist film The Instigators. Both movies have sequels in the works. As for Cruise, he just finished Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and is reportedly in talks to return for a sequel to his 1990 racing film Days of Thunder.
If all goes as planned, Deeper will start filming this summer. With the talent involved and the high budget, it’s already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about movies in production right now.
