Celebrity friendships occasionally produce speculation about creative collaborations that never actually materialize, but every so often a casual red carpet comment carries enough weight to spark genuine industry buzz. When two of the most recognizable names in entertainment start publicly floating the idea of working together, fans tend to take notice fast.

That’s exactly what happened this week during the promotional rollout for Tom Cruise’s latest film, where a routine red carpet question turned into a genuinely enthusiastic endorsement. Rather than deflecting or giving a vague, noncommittal answer, Cruise leaned fully into praising a collaborator he clearly admires.

Speaking with BuzzFeed UK at the London premiere of ‘Digger’ on Tuesday, September 22, Cruise was asked whether he’d star in a Taylor Swift music video if she ever asked. “You know, first of all I make movies. Let’s go make a movie,” Cruise replied in comments reported by Yahoo News UK, before adding that Swift would make an excellent feature film director in her own right.

Cruise didn’t stop at a passing compliment. He pointed directly to Swift’s established directing work, having helmed more than fifteen music videos throughout her career and earned four Best Director wins along the way. “If she ever decided to direct feature films, she could be a director of feature films,” Cruise said. “I know she does her videos, and she does a beautiful job. So it would be amazing to work with her on anything.”

That enthusiasm extended beyond Swift herself. Cruise also praised her family, calling her husband Travis Kelce “very magical” and describing Swift as “absolutely brilliant” and “a brilliant writer” throughout the conversation.

This isn’t the first time Cruise has publicly gushed about Swift recently. The two were spotted together at the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14, watching from Swift’s private suite. Cruise later told Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show’ that Swift had spent the game teaching him the finer points of football, calling her “a genius” he’d been following “since she was a kid.”

Cruise was also among the guests at Swift and Kelce’s wedding in New York City this past July, further underscoring just how close the two have grown within their respective circles over the past several months.

Cruise’s endorsement arrives at a particularly busy moment for Swift professionally. She’s set to release her new single “Patient Zero” on September 25, just days after this interview, and she’s also scheduled to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honours at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, formal recognition for a directing résumé that’s grown substantially over the years.

Given that recognition alongside Cruise’s public vote of confidence, speculation about whether Swift might eventually step behind the camera on an actual feature film seems increasingly plausible, even if nothing concrete has been announced.

Whether this translates into an actual project remains entirely speculative for now, but Cruise’s genuine enthusiasm leaves the door clearly open. Given his own track record of championing ambitious creative partnerships throughout his career, a future collaboration with Swift, whether in front of or behind the camera, no longer feels like an entirely far-fetched idea.
