Tom Cruise’s First Clip From ‘Digger’ Debuts During His Fallon Appearance, and He’s Nearly Unrecognizable

That reputation makes the actor’s latest transformation genuinely jarring to witness, especially given who convinced him to attempt it.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind “Birdman” and “The Revenant,” has spent years working toward this collaboration with Cruise, and audiences finally got their first real taste of the finished product this week when a new clip debuted during Cruise’s appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

The first clip from “Digger” shows Tom Cruise in full character as Digger Rockwell, an aging, overweight oil baron with graying hair, wrinkles, and a pronounced gut, a dramatic departure from the actor’s usual on-screen appearance. The film follows Rockwell, described in Warner Bros.’ official synopsis as the most powerful man in the world, as he scrambles to prove himself humanity’s savior before an environmental disaster he personally triggered destroys everything.

According to the story’s setup, Rockwell’s company causes a catastrophic methane leak tied to a shifting Greenland glacier, a crisis threatening to displace millions and potentially set off a chain reaction toward nuclear conflict. John Goodman plays the ailing U.S. president in the film, tasking Rockwell with literally digging his way out of the mess he created.

Cruise has spoken publicly about just how personal this collaboration felt, given his long admiration for Iñárritu’s earlier work. “It took 40 years for me to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell,” Cruise said, referencing his longtime fandom of the director dating back to Iñárritu’s 2000 breakout film “Amores Perros.”

Speaking with GQ’s Zach Baron about one particularly challenging sequence, the director described a scene built almost like a piece of choreography, one where there was zero room for error and the entire film’s momentum depended on Cruise executing it precisely.

Warner Bros. has billed “Digger” as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” and recent trailers have leaned into that tone, scoring key moments to a re-orchestrated version of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House.” The film centers on Rockwell’s capricious decision-making, which reportedly leads to an $18 trillion financial catastrophe on top of the environmental one.

Shot over six months in the United Kingdom, the film marks Iñárritu’s first English-language project since “The Revenant” and his first-ever collaboration with Cruise.
