Tom Cruise is officially set to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in a third “Top Gun” film, according to an announcement made by Paramount Pictures during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also coming back for the new installment.

The project has been in development for some time. Reports first suggested work on the sequel in 2024, with writer Ehren Kruger involved in the script. Kruger also worked on “Top Gun: Maverick” alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.

The second film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” was released in 2022 and became one of the biggest box office successes in recent years. According to industry figures, it earned around 1.5 billion dollars worldwide from a budget of about 170 million dollars. Its release helped bring audiences back to cinemas during the COVID-19 period, when theater attendance was still recovering.

The story in “Maverick” followed Cruise’s character returning to the elite flight school decades after the original 1986 film. He trained a group of younger pilots for a dangerous mission and also dealt with his past, including his connection to Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller. Rooster is the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Goose. The mission brings the team together, and they manage to complete it successfully.

The cast of “Maverick” included both returning and new faces. Alongside Cruise and Teller, actors such as Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Manny Jacinto played trainee pilots. Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Charles Parnell, and Bashir Salahuddin also appeared in key roles. The film also marked the final screen appearance of Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the original movie. Kilmer passed away in 2025.

Talk of a third film has been building for years. Miles Teller previously said in 2022 that he had discussed a possible sequel focused on his character Rooster. In 2024, reports confirmed early development, and by 2025, Christopher McQuarrie was officially writing the screenplay. Now, Paramount has confirmed that “Top Gun 3” is moving forward.

The studio has not yet revealed a release date or full plot details.
