Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Just Sank ‘Titanic’ to Become the Fourth Biggest Movie Ever Made

Box office milestones have become almost routine at this point in Tom Holland’s superhero run, with each new weekend seemingly bringing another record for his latest outing to break. What started as an impressive opening has stretched into one of the most dominant theatrical runs in recent memory, refusing to let up even a month into release.

That momentum has now delivered a milestone few could have predicted just a few weeks ago, dethroning a film that’s held its place atop the industry for nearly three decades.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially outgrossed the entire theatrical run of ‘Titanic,’ making it the fourth highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. According to Collider, the film crossed the threshold thanks to an additional $3.5 million in earnings, pushing its global total to $2.224 billion and officially sinking James Cameron’s 1997 epic, whose combined theatrical releases, including its 2012 3D re-release, had topped out at roughly $2.264 billion.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland alongside real-life wife Zendaya, the film had spent the previous week closing in on Titanic’s total, sitting just $44 million behind heading into its fourth Monday in theaters, according to Yardbarker. That gap closed faster than many analysts expected, with the film maintaining the number one spot on both domestic and global box office charts for four consecutive weekends.

The milestone puts ‘Brand New Day’ in genuinely rarefied company, trailing only Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Avengers: Endgame on the all-time global chart. Domestically, the film has already become the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie ever released, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s now within striking distance of surpassing ‘Endgame’ to claim the number two spot on the all-time domestic chart, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’

With less than $100 million separating ‘Brand New Day’ from third-placed ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ the film’s remarkable international performance shows little sign of slowing down. The movie has pulled in $1.365 billion overseas alone, a figure that’s helped drive its sustained climb up the all-time rankings even as domestic numbers begin to plateau after weeks at the top.

Forbes projects the film could ultimately finish its theatrical run somewhere around $2.45 billion worldwide, a total that would put it firmly within reach of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’s’ current standing. Competition throughout this stretch has remained relatively light, with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ holding steady in the number two global spot and becoming Nolan’s own highest-grossing film in the process, while horror sequel ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ has kept a foothold in the domestic top three.

Given how consistently ‘Brand New Day’ has outperformed expectations week after week, catching Avatar: The Way of Water’s total in the coming weeks feels less like a long shot and more like the natural next milestone in an already historic run. Whether Holland’s Spider-Man can eventually challenge Avatar or Avengers: Endgame for the top spots remains to be seen, but for now, sinking Titanic marks one of the most significant box office achievements of Tom Holland’s entire career.
