Marvel’s next Avengers crossover has been shrouded in secrecy for months, with fans left piecing together scattered casting confirmations and vague hints about who will actually anchor the story. Given how central Spider-Man has been to nearly every major Avengers team-up so far, his conspicuous absence from recent announcements has only fueled more speculation.

That speculation intensified considerably after Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was notably left out of the confirmed cast reveal for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the first half of Marvel’s two-part crossover event. With the character’s future in the franchise seemingly uncertain, fans have spent months debating exactly where, and how significantly, Spider-Man might factor into the larger story.

A new report is now suggesting Holland’s absence from ‘Doomsday’ may simply be setting up a much bigger payoff down the line. According to insider James Mackwl, “Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will be to Avengers Secret Wars what Stark was to Infinity War in terms of [protagonism],” the leaker posted on social media.

That comparison carries significant weight given how central Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark was to the emotional core of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ Stark’s journey through that film, shaped by years of guilt, trauma, and fear following the Battle of New York and the fallout of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ became one of the defining threads holding that crossover together.

If this rumor holds up, Holland’s Peter Parker would be positioned to carry a similarly weighty emotional arc in ‘Secret Wars,’ a significant departure from his more typically lighthearted portrayal across his solo Spider-Man trilogy. Marvel has not officially confirmed which character will lead the upcoming crossover, and details about the film’s plot remain largely under wraps.

This wouldn’t be the first time Spider-Man has followed a similar arc across two connected Avengers films. In the original Infinity Saga, Peter Parker had a substantial presence throughout ‘Infinity War’ before largely stepping back until the climactic final battle of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Other reports have suggested a similar dynamic might play out here, with Holland’s Spider-Man reportedly appearing in ‘Doomsday’ in a limited capacity before taking on a much larger “protagonist” role once ‘Secret Wars’ arrives. Sadie Sink, who joined the cast of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as Jean Grey, has also been reported as part of the ensemble converging for ‘Secret Wars,’ suggesting connective tissue between Holland’s recent solo film and the larger crossover event.

Adding to the mystery, Holland has openly admitted that Marvel has intentionally withheld plot details from him regarding ‘Secret Wars,’ a decision that makes sense given his well-documented history of accidentally spoiling major reveals. Holland previously leaked the poster for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ during an Instagram Live stream and once inadvertently revealed his own character’s death to an unsuspecting theater audience before the film had even been released.

Given that track record, Marvel’s decision to keep him uninformed about his character’s true role in the upcoming crossover isn’t particularly surprising. It does, however, mean that even Holland himself likely has no idea whether this latest rumor holds any truth.

If accurate, positioning Holland’s Spider-Man as the emotional anchor of ‘Secret Wars’ would mark a significant elevation for the character within the franchise’s larger mythology. It would also validate years of fan speculation that Peter Parker’s journey across the Multiverse Saga was always building toward something bigger than his standalone films alone could deliver.

With ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ still over a year away from its December 17, 2027 release, plenty of time remains for further details, official or otherwise, to surface. For now, this comparison to Tony Stark’s Infinity War arc gives fans one more tantalizing thread to hold onto.

Do you think Spider-Man will be the main emotional focus of Avengers: Secret Wars?
