Tomb Raider: Crystal Dynamics Announces New Game Is In Development

Crystal Dynamics, a video game developing company responsible for making the reboot game of the Tomb Raider franchise in 2013 and Marvel’s Avengers video game in 2020, officially announced that they’re developing a new installment in the Tomb Raider franchise.

The Tomb Raider franchise kicked off in 1996 with the original game developed by Core Design, and Crystal Dynamics started working on the franchise in 2006 with Tomb Raider: Legend, and they also developed two sequels, Anniversary and Underworld in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

In 2013, Crystal Dynamics developed a reboot game simply called Tomb Raider, which started a new franchise with Lara Croft’s story from the beginning. The company also developed a sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2016, and the final installment of the trilogy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released in 2018, was developed by Eidos-Montréal, and Crystal Dynamics only provided additional development.

Now, Crystal Dynamics is back as the primary developer of the next Tomb Raider video game. The only thing that is known so far is that the game will be made in Unreal Engine 5. Previous installments were made in Crystal Dynamics’ in-house Foundation engine. You can check the announcement down below:

Crystal Dynamics is incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level. That’s why we’re proud to announce that our next #tombraider game is being built on Unreal Engine 5!

Unreal Engine became one of the most used universal engines in video game development. CD Projekt RED, known for making The Witcher video games and Cyberpunk, also recently announced that they’re switching to the Unreal Engine for the development of the upcoming Witcher game.

One thing that we’re happy about is that Lara Croft will return with a new game because it’s been almost four years since the latest one. But, video games aren’t the only medium featuring the famous adventurer. A movie Tom Raider 2, starring Alicia Vikander, is also in development, as well as the animated series in which Lara Croft will be voiced by MCU star Hayley Atwell.
