Superhero movies require suspension of disbelief to accept flying men and magic hammers. Audiences inevitably notice logical inconsistencies when scripts prioritize spectacle over narrative cohesion. These narrative gaps often leave viewers questioning the mechanics of the universe long after the credits roll. The following list highlights significant plot holes that continue to puzzle fans of the genre.

‘Ant-Man’ (2015) – Mass Retention

'Ant-Man' (2015) - Mass Retention
Marvel Studios

Hank Pym explains that the Pym Particles shrink the distance between atoms while maintaining mass. This implies that a shrunk Scott Lang should weigh exactly the same as his full-sized self. He consistently runs across toy train tracks or rides on flying ants without crushing them under his human weight. The movie contradicts its own central scientific rule whenever it is convenient for the plot or an action sequence. Scott carrying a tank on a keychain breaks the established laws of physics presented just minutes earlier.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012) – Bruce Wayne’s Return

'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012) - Bruce Wayne's Return
DC Entertainment

Bane imprisons Bruce Wayne in a remote pit located in the Middle East or Asia without any resources. Bruce eventually escapes the prison and manages to return to a locked-down Gotham City within hours. The film never explains how a penniless man traveled across the world and infiltrated a city under strict military quarantine. He appears instantly clean and shaved despite having no money or identification to board a plane.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) – Old Captain America

Marvel Studios

The Ancient One and Hulk establish that changing the past creates a branching timeline rather than altering the present. Steve Rogers travels back to live his life with Peggy Carter which should theoretically create a separate reality. He somehow appears as an old man on the bench in the primary timeline without using the quantum tunnel to return. Writers and directors have given conflicting explanations about whether Steve lived in the main timeline or jumped back at the last second.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (2020) – The Magic Jet

'Wonder Woman 1984' (2020) - The Magic Jet
Warner Bros. Pictures

Diana and Steve Trevor steal a fighter jet from a museum to fly all the way to Cairo. The jet has been sitting for decades yet somehow has enough fuel and functional parts to make a transcontinental flight. They manage to fly thousands of miles without refueling or alerting any military radar systems along the way. Wonder Woman makes the plane invisible but that does not account for the noise or physical displacement of air.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ (2014) – Kitty Pryde’s Powers

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014) - Kitty Pryde's Powers
20th Century Fox

Kitty Pryde possesses the mutant ability to phase through solid objects in all previous franchise installments. She suddenly displays the power to send consciousness back in time without any narrative justification or setup. This secondary mutation appears solely because the plot requires a mechanism to facilitate the time travel storyline. The film never addresses how or when she developed this god-like chronokinetic ability.

‘Superman’ (1978) – Turning Back Time

'Superman' (1978) - Turning Back Time
Dovemead Films

Superman flies around the Earth at faster-than-light speeds to reverse its rotation and turn back time. Physics dictates that reversing the rotation of the planet would cause massive destruction rather than manipulating temporal mechanics. Lois Lane dies in the initial timeline yet Superman saves her by undoing events that had already occurred. This power removes all stakes from the narrative since he can simply reset any tragedy.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021) – Electro’s Knowledge

'Spider-Man: No Way Home' (2021) - Electro's Knowledge
Marvel Studios

Doctor Strange casts a spell to bring in villains who knew that Peter Parker was Spider-Man in their respective universes. Electro arrives in the MCU despite never discovering Spider-Man’s secret identity during the events of his original film. The character died in his timeline without ever seeing Peter Parker’s face or hearing his name. His inclusion violates the specific magical parameters established by Doctor Strange for the incantation.

‘Black Panther’ (2018) – Killmonger’s Plan

'Black Panther' (2018) - Killmonger's Plan
Marvel Studios

Killmonger relies on a series of highly improbable events to infiltrate Wakanda and challenge T’Challa. He depends on Klaue getting captured and T’Challa failing to kill him or bring him back to the country. His plan assumes he can just walk up to the border tribe and they will immediately accept him without verification. The timing requires perfect synchronization of global travel and political unrest that he could not possibly predict.

‘Man of Steel’ (2013) – Jonathan Kent’s Death

'Man of Steel' (2013) - Jonathan Kent's Death
DC Entertainment

Jonathan Kent sacrifices himself to a tornado to protect Clark’s secret identity from a handful of bystanders. Clark could have used his super speed to save his father without anyone noticing anything unusual. The scene suggests that letting his father die was the only way to keep his powers hidden from the public. This decision feels illogical given the vast array of abilities Clark possessed even at that young age.

‘Captain Marvel’ (2019) – The Fury Pager

'Captain Marvel' (2019) - The Fury Pager
Marvel Studios

Nick Fury waits until half the universe is disintegrated by Thanos before activating the pager to call Captain Marvel. He encountered multiple world-ending threats during the Chitauri invasion and the Ultron offensive without summoning her. The film establishes she is his ultimate backup plan yet he refuses to use it during prior catastrophic events. This creates a retrospective issue regarding why Earth’s mightiest defender was absent for decades.
