Top Gun 3 Is Happening – Director Teases “Big, Ambitious” New Story Fans Won’t See Coming

The next Top Gun movie is moving forward, and director Joseph Kosinski just shared an exciting update. After the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, which brought Tom Cruise back as Maverick to train a new team of pilots, fans have been waiting to hear what’s next.

Now, Top Gun 3 is officially in the works, and Kosinski is returning to direct.

While talking to ScreenRant during an interview about his upcoming film F1: The Movie, Kosinski explained that the third Top Gun is still being written.

The script is being handled by Ehren Kruger, who also worked on Maverick. Kosinski didn’t share plot details, but he did hint that the story is built around a big and bold idea.

“Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak. It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along,” Kosinski said.

Even though Top Gun: Maverick felt like a strong ending for the story, Kosinski says the idea for the third film was too exciting to walk away from.

“It was about coming up with an idea that — again — felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can’t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That’s what’s exciting to me,” he added.

Top Gun: Maverick got a lot of love from famous directors. Quentin Tarantino said it was “fantastic” and reminded him of real movie magic. He felt the film showed great respect for Tony Scott, who directed the first Top Gun. Tarantino said the movie felt like a tribute to Tony in every part of it.

Steven Spielberg also praised the movie. He said it helped save movie theaters after a tough time for the film industry.

Ridley Scott, Tony Scott’s brother, got to see the movie early. He praised it and said Tom Cruise did a great job honoring Tony.

But not everyone was impressed. Director Fede Álvarez said Ridley told him the movie was just “meh” and that the original was better. Still, he respected the new movie.

The movie was dedicated to Tony Scott’s memory.

In May 2022, Teller revealed that he had been pitching a sequel, which would be tentatively titled Top Gun: Rooster and centered on his character, to Paramount Pictures. By July of the same year, he stated that he had been having ongoing discussions with Cruise regarding a sequel.

There’s still no word on when Top Gun 3 will hit theaters or what the plot will be, but Tom Cruise is expected to return as Maverick. With the team behind Maverick back and working on a new chapter, fans have good reason to get excited.
