Transgender Drama ‘Midnight in Bali’ Debuts Trailer Ahead of Rotterdam Premiere
‘Midnight in Bali’ is an upcoming drama directed by Indonesian filmmaker Razka Robby Ertanto. The movie is set to debut at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Harbour section, known for highlighting innovative and socially relevant cinema. The film really looks into themes of identity, community, and personal transformation, with a new trailer giving audiences a brief look at its powerful story.
The story centers on Bulan, a transgender woman working as a club performer in Bali. She navigates a complicated relationship with a conflicted police officer while dealing with her own challenging past. Bulan’s life takes an unexpected turn when she provides shelter to her neighbor Mira, who is fleeing an abusive relationship. Mira becomes intrigued by Bulan’s queer community and proposes collaborating on a film about Bulan’s life.
Through this collaboration, the audience learns about Bulan’s history, including her escape from a strict religious upbringing and her move to Bali with her lover, Bram, only to find him missing when she arrives.
Her search for Bram leads her into the darker corners of the city, where she eventually discovers him working in the adult entertainment industry. These experiences become central to Mira’s film, creating a complex narrative where past trauma intersects with present challenges, leading to unforeseen consequences.
Director Ertanto uses Bali’s unique cultural setting to frame the story, blending its traditional roots with the rapid modernity that defines the island today. “Bali is a complex intersection of fast modernity and conservatism. The epitome of our contradictions,” Ertanto explains. “As a director I feel obligated to this issue of representation, always deeply intricated with our hope for social justice.”
The film features a talented cast, including Juan Bio One, Tatjana Saphira, Luna Maya, Carissa Perussete, and Donny Damara.
