‘Ultimates’ #12 & #13 Preview: Writer Deniz Camp Talks Big Changes, New Heroes, and the Maker’s Return

The Ultimate Universe is heading into its second year of resistance, and things are about to get even more intense. Writer Deniz Camp and artist Juan Frigeri are continuing their run on ULTIMATES, a series that follows a group of heroes fighting back against the Maker’s rule in Earth-6160.

The Maker tried to stop heroism from ever taking root in this new universe. But Iron Lad, Doom (a version of Reed Richards), and their team, the Ultimates, refused to give up.

They created a resistance network and have spent the last year fighting against the Maker’s control. With the villain trapped in his dome, the Ultimates used that time to strike back and weaken his grip on power.

In issue #12, the team is regrouping. After a tough few months filled with danger and loss, they are no longer the same.

Writer Deniz Camp says Iron Lad, who nearly died during a fight with Bruce Banner in issue #6, is seeing things very differently now.

Dramatically,” Camp said when asked how the experience changed Iron Lad. “Whether that’s put him (and the Ultimates) on a better or worse path, I think, is the more interesting question.

Issue #13 marks a major shift. Only six months remain before the Maker returns—and that raises the stakes in a big way.

Camp teased big changes for the team and the story.

“As readers who follow the solicits will know, it’s the next evolution of the book and the team — Ultimates 3.0,” he said. “Things change dramatically for every member of the team and the very nature of how the Ultimates operates. There is a palpable urgency to the book, as time runs out.”

In the first year of Ultimates, fans met reimagined heroes like Doom and new characters like Charli Ramsey (the Ultimate version of Hawkeye). Year Two will bring even more surprises.

We’ve already announced Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver — and there will be another fan favorite making an appearance in that issue,” Camp revealed.
Later issues will introduce notable names and some less notable names. Plus we’ll see various villains and radical groups we’ve introduced in the series come back into play. Year Two is wild and even more filled with ideas and earth-shattering changes than before.

As Camp puts it: “Remember: This is a rescue mission.”

With high stakes, new heroes, and the Maker’s return on the horizon, Ultimates is ready to shake up the Ultimate Universe like never before.
