Universal Scrambles To Contain Massive Piracy Wave After ‘The Odyssey’ Leaks Online
Christopher Nolan built his reputation on protecting the theatrical experience, and ‘The Odyssey’ was supposed to be the ultimate showcase for that philosophy. The director had urged fans to see the film in Imax, having shot it entirely in that format to optimize the moviegoing experience. For a filmmaker so devoted to the big screen, the last thing he needed was for his passion project to end up circulating on phones and laptops instead.
That is exactly what happened over the weekend. A high-quality bootleg of Nolan’s epic reportedly reached over 2.1 million views within just two and a half hours after being posted on X. The post that kicked things off asked users if they could believe someone had uploaded the full movie, and it quickly sent a wave of viewers to the now-suspended account.
Universal did not sit on its hands. The studio confirmed it became aware of the unauthorized posting and immediately initiated takedown protocols, adding that it takes copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect its content and intellectual property rights, according to a statement shared with Variety. By the following morning, most if not all of the leaked copies had reportedly been scrubbed from the platform.
The chaos did not stop there. A separate, lower-quality version was posted on X the following Sunday morning, only to be pulled down roughly two hours later after amassing nearly 50,000 views. Plenty of users searching for the film afterward found themselves tricked by renamed files that actually contained unrelated content, including the classic internet Rickroll prank redirecting viewers to Rick Astley’s decades old music video.
Piracy attempts aside, ‘The Odyssey’ has had no trouble finding a real audience. The film’s second weekend brought in $87 million domestically, dropping only 30 percent from its opening frame, with a global cume reaching $639.6 million. That performance reportedly makes ‘The Odyssey’ the best second weekend of any Nolan film, surpassing even ‘The Dark Knight.’
The epic reimagines Homer’s ancient poem with a stacked cast. Matt Damon leads as the legendary Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway plays his wife Penelope, who must protect the kingdom and her missing husband’s legacy in his absence. The story also features Tom Holland as Odysseus’s son Telemachus and Jon Bernthal in a mystery role, alongside narration early on from Robert Pattinson.
This is not the first time the production has dealt with unauthorized footage making the rounds. A teaser for the film had already leaked online on X and TikTok more than a year before release, with Nolan’s jump from Warner Bros. to Universal following his frustration over simultaneous streaming releases undercutting theatrical runs. The irony of a film built entirely around theatrical prestige becoming a piracy target twice over has not been lost on fans watching the saga unfold.
With ‘The Odyssey’ still packing theaters and chasing a billion dollar milestone, the leak controversy seems unlikely to slow its momentum.
