Upcoming ‘Superman’ Sequel May Feature an Unlikely Alliance, Says James Gunn
James Gunn has revealed new details about the upcoming Superman film, titled Man of Tomorrow, which is set to release on July 9, 2027.
Gunn, who is both writing and directing the film, said it will not be a direct sequel to the 2025 Superman movie, but Superman will play a major role. Filming is scheduled to begin in April 2026, and Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Odessa Corenswet are expected to return, according to reports from Warner Bros. Discovery.
Gunn described the story as “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” during an interview on The Howard Stern Show.
This hints at an unexpected team-up between Superman and his longtime nemesis. Such alliances have appeared in the comics before. For example, during the Forever Evil storyline in the New 52 Justice League, Lex Luthor led surviving villains and heroes, including Superman, to fight the Crime Syndicate from Earth-Three.
Luthor even removed a kryptonite implant used to control Superman, showing that the two could cooperate when facing a larger danger.
Other comic book stories have explored similar situations. After the death of Superboy in a pocket universe created by the villain Time Trapper, Lex Luthor brought Superman from Earth-One to stop General Zod and other Kryptonians.
Luthor sacrificed himself in the process but guided Superman to the kryptonite needed to defeat the threat. These moments highlight that even bitter enemies can work together when the world is at stake.
