Vanessa Kirby Says She’s “Dying” to Explore Sue Storm’s Dark Side in Future MCU Project
The new Fantastic Four movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is a big success with both fans and critics. Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, who is the heart of the team.
Alongside her are Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. While Sue Storm is shown as a strong and loving leader in the movie, there’s another side of her from the comics that fans may find really interesting: Malice.
Vanessa Kirby, who became famous for her role as Princess Margaret in The Crown and earned an Oscar nomination for Pieces of a Woman, has been incredibly busy. Besides saving the world as Sue Storm, she’s been filming Avengers: Doomsday and doing a worldwide press tour.
All of this while being pregnant with her first child. Over the phone, she shared how tired but happy she feels, saying, “I’m lying flat today! I can’t believe I’ve actually managed to lie flat during the daytime. I haven’t known that for a long time.”
Kirby talks about how playing Sue Storm helped her understand motherhood in a new way. The movie opens with Sue being pregnant and worried about the future of her child because of their cosmic powers. When Galactus, the huge cosmic villain, comes to Earth, Sue and her team go to space to stop him. She eventually gives birth to her son Franklin and fights to protect him at all costs. Even when she sacrifices herself, Franklin’s power brings her back.
Vanessa says she loved playing Sue as a strong leader who’s not just powerful but also deeply caring. “She always felt like a total mixture of so many things: obviously, deeply maternal and deeply loving and incredibly steady, but also fierce,” she said. She found that Sue’s fierce nature helped her connect with the idea of motherhood as something brave and tough.
But there’s more to Sue than what we see in the movie. Vanessa is excited about the possibility of playing Malice, Sue Storm’s darker side from the comics. Malice comes from a difficult past, losing her mother in a car accident, her father falling into alcoholism, going to prison, and eventually dying.
“Itching! I’m dying to do Malice. She’s come from a really tough background. She lost her mother in a car crash. Her dad tried to save her mother. He couldn’t. He then spiraled, became an alcoholic, got locked up in prison for murdering a loan shark, and then died. Sue had to become a mother to Johnny. They were orphans. They had to fight for themselves. What I loved about her was that she chose a path that was inherently a positive one. She chose to keep her heart open and to stay warm. The Future Foundation, for me, wasn’t a noble political act, but it seemed to me that it’s Sue’s nature.” Kirby said.
Sue had to take care of her brother Johnny and grow up fast. Despite all this, Malice chose to keep her heart open and warm. Vanessa explained that “The Future Foundation, for me, wasn’t a noble political act, but it seemed to me that it’s Sue’s nature.”
She also mentioned how powerful and dangerous Sue’s abilities can be. In the comics, Sue sometimes threatens her enemies with deadly force, like giving someone an aneurysm or suffocating them with her powers. “These powers are also really lethal and really dangerous. But these four have chosen to unite the global community and be a force for good. But they could also choose to be a force for bad,” Vanessa said.
This shows that Sue’s strength comes with a choice , she could be dark but chooses to stay good.
Vanessa feels deeply connected to Sue’s story, especially her transformation from Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman, which happens after she faces Malice, her own dark side. She described it as a moment of growth and facing the hardest parts of yourself. “There’s something about meeting the hardest parts of yourself in Malice that felt extremely poignant to me. I’m really hopeful I might be allowed to be Malice at some point for her.”
Fans can look forward to seeing more of this powerful and complex character, including the darker, more dangerous Malice, in the films to come.
