Vanessa Kirby Teases Sue Storm’s Storyline in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
The Fantastic Four are back on the big screen. The film is the second reboot of the iconic superhero team and the 37th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Matt Shakman, the movie was written by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, and Jeff Kaplan with Ian Springer.
The cast includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the Fantastic Four, with Julia Garner, Sarah Niles, Mark Gatiss, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ralph Ineson in supporting roles.
Set in a retro-futuristic 1960s, the story sees the Fantastic Four facing off against the planet-eating cosmic villain Galactus, played by Ineson.
Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, plays a central role in the movie. She ends up being the one to stop Galactus, but it comes at a huge personal cost. During the fight, she pushes Galactus toward a bridge and teleports him away, using all her energy. The effort is too much, and she dies. However, her son Franklin, even as a young child, taps into his powers and brings her back to life.
In a recent interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman, Kirby opened up about what this means for Sue Storm’s future in the MCU, especially in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. “I love that I get to continue with Sue because it’s so interesting,” she said. Kirby explained that her character won’t simply move on from the near-death experience in First Steps. “I’ve been thinking a lot doing Avengers and stuff about how someone that’s been through, in the space of basically a week, someone who has given birth and has died and come back to life… how a death experience like that would change you.”
Kirby also shared that she’s been doing research to make her performance in Avengers: Doomsday feel real. She has been listening to people who survived near-death experiences to understand how it changes a person. “I’ve been listening to a lot of people that have had those kind of experiences and what they learn, and therefore how different they are after they come back from that,” she explained.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.
The movie is set fourteen months after the events of Thunderbolts (2025) and brings together the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and the original X-Men to face Doctor Doom. Vanessa Kirby confirmed that the entire main cast of First Steps will return for Doomsday, making it a true continuation of the story.
Fans can also look forward to the sequel, Secret Wars, which is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
