‘Verity’ Star Dakota Johnson Trades Sheer for Sparkle at the MTV VMAs, and the Look Is a Showstopper

Few stars have dominated the fashion conversation this month quite like Dakota Johnson, and her MTV VMAs look added a glamorous new chapter to an already headline-grabbing stretch. The actress has been in the middle of a whirlwind promotional run, and her style choices have followed her every step of the way.

Much of that buzz came from her daring London appearances. During the ‘Verity’ press tour, she arrived at the film’s London premiere in an ivory lace naked dress with Fleur du Mal lingerie, followed by a colorful sheer moment. Her sheer Colleen Allen gown also turned plenty of heads.

Johnson then made an unexpected detour. She was not previously announced as a presenter, but appeared at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony was broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

For the occasion, she changed the mood completely. Johnson wore a custom Calvin Klein Collection blush iridescent sequin-embroidered gown, with Messika jewels completing the look. New photos by Christopher Polk for CBS show off the full effect of the shimmering column silhouette, paired with her signature bangs and red manicure.

The contrast with her recent looks was not lost on fashion watchers. Red Carpet Fashion Awards noted that going sheer is practically par for the course at the VMAs, so Johnson’s choice of sequins felt like a surprise. The outlet even argued the dress deserved a proper red carpet moment of its own.

Her role on stage carried real significance. Johnson presented the inaugural Artist Director Honors award to Taylor Swift, officially making Swift the most-awarded artist in VMAs history. The honor recognized Swift’s success in realizing her artistic vision as both a music video performer and director.

Johnson praised Swift during the presentation, describing her as a visionary with a relentless drive for perfection in everything she does. After presenting the award, the pair introduced the music video for Swift’s new single, “Patient Zero”, in which Johnson stars alongside Colin Farrell.

The collaboration is personal for both stars. Johnson has said on the ‘Fangirl Nation’ podcast that she and Swift have been friends for years, making the project extra special even though she usually avoids working with friends. Johnson attended Swift’s July wedding, and the pair were spotted having dinner together in August.

The admiration runs both ways. Earlier this year, Swift wrote an essay celebrating Johnson for the Time100 issue. Johnson also told Variety that working with Swift was wonderful, explaining that they’ve known each other so long and deeply respect each other’s creative minds.

The VMAs appearance kicks off a busy stretch for the 36-year-old. Her new film ‘Verity’ hits theaters on Friday, putting her at the center of one of the season’s most anticipated thrillers.

With a stunning sequin gown, a milestone moment for her longtime friend, and a major release on the horizon, Johnson has delivered yet another reminder of why she remains one of Hollywood’s most compelling style stars.
