Vincent D’Onofrio set a Guinness World Record for the most weight gained for a movie role with his performance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film Full Metal Jacket.

D’Onofrio played Private Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence, a heavyset and awkward Marine recruit going through boot camp. Casting the role was challenging, but D’Onofrio, who was still relatively unknown at the time, landed the part.

To prepare, he gained 70 (32 kg) pounds, reaching 280 pounds (130 kg). The transformation took a toll on his body, causing torn ligaments in his legs. After filming, it took him nine months to safely return to his normal weight.

Critics praised D’Onofrio’s work. Richard Corliss of Time described the film as a “technical knockout” and said D’Onofrio, alongside R. Lee Ermey, deserved an Oscar nomination. Roger Ebert called their performances “the two best in the movie, which never recovers after they leave the scene.”

Some outlets, like Time Out London, criticized the film for underdeveloped characters, but D’Onofrio’s commitment to the role is widely recognized as one of the most extreme examples of physical dedication in Hollywood.

His record shows how far actors are willing to go to bring a character to life.

D’Onofrio’s dedication is remarkable. Gaining and losing so much weight for a role shows serious commitment, even with the physical risks involved. Do you think actors should go to such extremes for a part? Share your thoughts in the comments.
