‘VisionQuest’ Could Be Just the Beginning as Marvel’s Showrunner Wants 10 More Seasons

Marvel may be calling VisionQuest the final chapter of its WandaVision trilogy, but Terry Matalas clearly isn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters. The showrunner has revealed that he, Paul Bettany and James Spader were already thinking about doing much more with the story almost immediately after finishing production. In fact, Matalas says they were ready to jump into another 10 seasons if Marvel gave them the chance.

That does not mean Marvel has actually ordered more VisionQuest. There is no renewal announcement at this point, and the future of the series is still in the hands of Marvel Studios. Still, Matalas’ comments make it clear that the people making the show are not treating this world like something that has to disappear once the current story is finished. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Matalas explained just how much enthusiasm there was behind the scenes. “The second we wrapped, Paul, James, and I were immediately ready to go into 10 more seasons of whatever this could be,” he said. He then added, “But that’s up to Marvel Studios and the television gods as to what happens.”

The idea of continuing beyond VisionQuest is not completely new. Matalas previously spoke with The Direct about the future of the characters and suggested that finishing the trilogy does not necessarily mean every story has been closed. “There is a group of characters in situations that are certainly on their own island, if you will,” he explained. He also said, “You could very much see these characters again, if you want.” That sounds like Marvel has plenty of room to bring some of them back later, even if VisionQuest really does serve as the end of the current trilogy.

One of the biggest reasons there is still so much potential is the strange relationship between Vision and Ultron. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader is back as Ultron, a character fans haven’t seen in this way since Avengers: Age of Ultron. Their new setup is expected to be one of the show’s biggest attractions, especially because Vision and Ultron have such a complicated history. Instead of simply being enemies, the series appears ready to explore something much stranger and more personal between them.

VisionQuest is also going beyond the usual superhero action. Matalas has teased that the show will look at Tony Stark’s death from Avengers: Endgame through the eyes of his artificial intelligence creations. F.R.I.D.A.Y. was there when Stark died, and the series will explore what that moment could mean for an AI that was designed to protect him. Matalas asked SFX Magazine, “What’s that like for an AI, to not be able to protect the one they’re programmed to protect?” That question fits perfectly with the show’s larger themes of memory, loss and what it means to have some form of identity.

There is also a connection to Agatha All Along that could become very important. Tommy Maximoff, Wanda’s son, remains somewhere in the MCU after the events of that series, and Matalas has suggested that his story could connect with VisionQuest. Speaking with The Direct, he said, “If you watched Agatha, you certainly know there’s a Tommy Maximoff out there somewhere. So that may or may not play into this.” It is classic Marvel teasing, but it also shows that the three shows are being designed to feel connected rather than existing as completely separate stories.

Matalas also has plenty of experience handling beloved characters and long-running franchises. Before taking on VisionQuest, he worked on Star Trek: Picard, including its highly praised third season. That season brought back the main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and gave those characters another major story together. His experience with legacy characters makes him a strong fit for a project that is built around familiar Marvel faces while also trying to take them somewhere new.

For now, fans should not take the “10 more seasons” comment as confirmation that more VisionQuest is coming. Marvel still has to decide whether these characters have another story worth telling and whether the studio wants to continue this part of the MCU. But Matalas has certainly made his position clear. He and his stars are ready to keep going, and if Marvel ever gives them the green light, it sounds like they already have plenty of ideas.
