‘VisionQuest’ May Finally Pay off a 15-Year-Old Marvel Easter Egg Fans Almost Forgot About

Marvel’s next Disney+ series has spent months building anticipation around Vision’s search for identity, but a recent report suggests the show might be doing something far more unexpected than fans initially realized. Rather than simply exploring Vision’s own history, ‘VisionQuest‘ appears set to introduce a character whose Marvel Cinematic Universe roots actually predate Vision himself.

That connection traces all the way back to 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ where eagle-eyed fans first spotted a synthetic man displayed in a glass tube during the film’s Stark Expo sequence. The prop was never named on screen, but its design closely mirrored a specific character from Marvel’s earliest comic book era, functioning as a quiet Easter egg that mostly went unremarked upon for well over a decade.

Jim Hammond will reportedly appear in ‘VisionQuest,’ according to Daniel Richtman. The report follows fan speculation sparked by a promotional D23 art display for the series, which depicted a fiery, human-shaped figure that Richtman subsequently confirmed to be Hammond, also known as the original Human Torch.

Hammond first debuted in 1939’s ‘Marvel Comics’ #1 as one of Marvel’s very first superheroes, an android built by scientist Phineas Horton who fought alongside Captain America and Namor as a member of the Invaders during World War II. That WWII-era history lines up directly with the unnamed prop glimpsed in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ retroactively confirming the reference as an intentional nod to Hammond all along.

Hammond’s connection to Vision runs even deeper within the comics themselves. In a storyline from ‘Avengers’ #133-135, Ultron discovers Hammond’s discarded, lifeless robotic body and uses it, along with Wonder Man’s essence, to create the Vision, erasing Hammond’s original memories in the process with help from his own creator, Phineas Horton.

That comic book history makes Hammond’s inclusion in ‘VisionQuest’ feel especially fitting, given the show’s broader premise. The series is expected to follow White Vision on a journey through the MCU’s wider android and AI landscape, bringing him face-to-face with digital personalities like JARVIS, EDITH, FRIDAY, DUM-E, and even James Spader’s returning Ultron.

If Hammond’s appearance is confirmed, it would mark the character’s first substantive live-action role, arriving fifteen years after his brief, unnamed cameo in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’ It would also represent the first time any character on the MCU’s core Earth-616 timeline has directly encountered a version of the Human Torch, effectively cementing him as canon within the franchise’s primary continuity.

Marvel Television has not officially confirmed Hammond’s casting or appearance, and the character’s exact role in the series remains unclear beyond the speculation stemming from the D23 artwork. Given the show’s stated focus on androids and artificial intelligence, though, Hammond’s inclusion would fit naturally alongside the other synthetic characters already confirmed for the series.
