‘VisionQuest’ New Look Teases Tommy Maximoff’s Return and a Mystery That Could Change Everything

Marvel is getting ready to bring one of its strangest family stories back to the screen, and the first look at VisionQuest is giving fans a new reason to pay attention. While Paul Bettany’s White Vision remains at the center of the series, a new image featuring Tommy Maximoff and Lisa Molinari hints that the story will be just as much about the next generation as it is about Vision himself.

The image, shared by Cosmic Marvel, features Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff and Lauren Morais as Lisa Molinari. Their characters are expected to have an important connection in the upcoming Disney+ series, although Marvel is still keeping many details about their relationship under wraps. That mystery makes the first look even more interesting, especially because both characters appear to have a much bigger role than fans might have expected.

Tommy is one of the most important pieces of the story that started with WandaVision. During that series, Wanda and Vision created twin sons, Billy and Tommy, inside the strange reality of Westview. Billy eventually became a major part of Agatha All Along, while Tommy’s future took a much more complicated path. During that series, Billy’s soul was connected to a teenager named Thomas Shepherd, setting up the version of Tommy that audiences are expected to meet in VisionQuest.

Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, who is widely understood to be the older version of Tommy. That gives the character a chance to finally grow beyond the brief appearance he had as a child. Fans have been waiting to see what happens to Wanda and Vision’s sons now that they are no longer children, and VisionQuest looks ready to explore that question in a much bigger way.

Lisa Molinari is another interesting part of the picture. Morais plays the character, who has a close connection to Tommy in the series. Comic book readers may recognize the name Coat of Arms, which is associated with Lisa in Marvel Comics. It is not yet clear how much of that comic history will appear in the show, but the connection could become important as Tommy’s story develops.

At the same time, Vision has problems of his own. After returning as White Vision at the end of WandaVision, he has been left without much of the life he once knew. He looks like Vision, but his memories and sense of identity have been badly damaged. VisionQuest appears ready to finally put that question front and center and ask what happens when someone has to rebuild their entire sense of self.

Showrunner Terry Matalas explained the direction of the series in an interview with Empire. He said this is the first time viewers will really see Vision driving the story and dealing with questions about who he is and who he believes he used to be. Matalas even described the project as “the Vision movie” of the MCU.

Bettany has also spoken about why Vision remains such an unusual character. In comments to Screen Rant, the actor said Matalas understood why people connect with Vision, especially those who have felt like outsiders or struggled to find somewhere they belong. That emotional side could make the series feel very different from a typical superhero show.

The cast also brings back several familiar faces from Marvel’s past. James Spader is returning as Ultron, while James D’Arcy will once again voice J.A.R.V.I.S. Orla Brady returns as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H., and Faran Tahir is back as Raza from the original Iron Man. With so many characters connected to Tony Stark and Vision’s history, the series could end up digging deep into the MCU’s technology-driven past.

VisionQuest will run for eight episodes and is set to arrive on Disney+ on October 14. Matalas is among the directors, working alongside Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro and Vincenzo Natali. Kevin Feige is producing the series for Marvel Television.

The show is also expected to serve as the final part of the story that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along. That gives VisionQuest a lot of ground to cover, especially with Vision, Tommy and the wider Maximoff family all carrying unfinished stories.
