Few TV transformations have been as striking as Walton Goggins’ turn as the Ghoul in ‘Fallout’. The scarred, nomadic gunslinger, once the Vault-Tec spokesman Cooper Howard, has become one of Prime Video’s most memorable characters and a big part of the show’s success.

Bringing that character to life takes serious work. Goggins has described a makeup routine of just over 2 hours, which he passes with a short conversation, around 90 minutes of watching a Western, and a final stretch listening to an Ennio Morricone score.

Now that routine is done for another season. Goggins has wrapped filming on ‘Fallout’ season 3, sharing the news in an Instagram reel recorded while driving a convertible through the California desert in sunglasses.

In the video, he said he had taken off the Ghoul’s look for the last time this season and admitted how good it felt to reach the finish line. He also said he wished the drive, and the song playing along with it, would never end.

Goggins closed by saying goodbye to California until next time, a sign he’s looking forward to returning to the Wasteland. Fans quickly shared the clip, celebrating the milestone for one of the streaming era’s biggest video game adaptations.

The post completes a journey that began in early June. On June 7, Goggins shared a photo of himself in the makeup chair captioned “Back in the saddle,” tagging his makeup artist, Jake Garber, whose Emmy-winning credits include ‘The X-Files’ and ‘The Walking Dead’.

Production took place mainly in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita, California. Amazon MGM Studios reportedly moved the timeline up to shorten the wait between seasons, starting filming soon after season 2 concluded.

Frederick E.O. Toye returned to direct, while Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner continue as creators and showrunners. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan remain among the executive producers.

Season 2 ended with the Ghoul heading toward Colorado in search of his wife and daughter. Robertson-Dworet has teased that the trip may not be a straight line, while executive producer Todd Howard hinted the show can move between locations in ways the games can’t.

The new season is expected to bring game elements that were previously left out, including a branching narrative, a focus on Colorado, and expanded Enclave lore. That should give fans of the Bethesda franchise plenty to look forward to.

Goggins is joined by returning stars Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean, Aaron Moten as Maximus, and Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean. Moisés Arias and Frances Turner are also part of the ensemble.

The season adds several new faces. Aaron Paul, Manny Jacinto, Emily Mortimer, Thomasin McKenzie and Annabel O’Hagan join the cast, while Dave Register has been promoted to series regular.

Amazon hasn’t announced a premiere date, but the new season is expected to arrive in 2027. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Prime Video for anyone who wants to catch up first. The future looks promising beyond that, too. A 4th season is considered likely, and Moten has reportedly said the showrunners have a planned ending that spans 6 seasons.

With filming complete, attention now turns to post-production and the long wait for the Ghoul’s next chapter. If Goggins’ joyful sign-off is any indication, the cast had a great time making it.
