The future of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a hot topic ever since her big role in WandaVision and her dramatic exit in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

After playing a smaller part in the Infinity Saga, Wanda Maximoff became a major character in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. Her popularity soared thanks to WandaVision, one of the most talked-about Marvel TV shows.

But her journey took a sharp turn in Doctor Strange 2, where Wanda turned into a villain chasing her sons across different realities, leaving chaos behind. The movie ended with Wanda sacrificing herself to destroy the Darkholds, which made many fans wonder if she was truly gone for good.

Matt Shakman, who directed all episodes of WandaVision and is now working on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, talked about Wanda’s fate during an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan.

Although he didn’t reveal any plans Marvel might have for the character, he dropped a hopeful hint about her return, saying, “Wanda’s never gone.”

Shakman also compared working on WandaVision and Fantastic Four, explaining how both projects involved careful world-building and attention to detail. He shared how the teams studied old sitcoms, watched classic films, and even researched places like the World’s Fair and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to create authentic looks and feels for their stories. He said, “Both of them were stylistic and tonal experiments, which I love doing as a filmmaker.”

While Shakman’s comment suggests Wanda might come back, Marvel fans haven’t heard much else from the studio.

Kevin Feige, Marvel’s president, teased her return a few months ago, saying, “We’re excited to find out when and how the Scarlet Witch might return.” But Elizabeth Olsen herself seems focused on other projects right now. In a recent interview, when asked if she was staying in London to film new Avengers movies, she replied, “No, I’m back [in the States]. I just finished. I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters].” This hints that Scarlet Witch may not appear in the next two Avengers films planned for 2026 and 2027.

Olsen first played Wanda in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and has since appeared in six Marvel movies, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness being her most recent live-action role. Besides live-action, she also voices Wanda in the animated series What If…? and is expected to return for the upcoming Marvel Zombies in 2025.

For now, Olsen’s schedule is filled with non-Marvel work, and Marvel Studios hasn’t shared any new updates about Scarlet Witch’s future. Whether this means Wanda is truly done for now or just waiting for the right time to come back remains a mystery. Fans will have to wait and see what’s next for one of the MCU’s most complex characters.
