Warner Bros. Is Diving Back Into ‘Free Willy’ With the Russo Brothers at the Helm

Nostalgic franchises keep finding new life in Hollywood, and the latest one making a splash is a family classic that helped define a generation of animal lovers. Studios have been mining the ’90s for years now, pulling beloved titles off the shelf and giving them fresh coats of paint for modern audiences.

Warner Bros. and Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO are officially partnering on a reimagining of the 1993 adventure movie ‘Free Willy.’ Mary-Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett have been tapped to write the new screenplay. The news was first broken by The Hollywood Reporter, and it quickly spread across entertainment social media, including a post from The Hollywood Handle that pointed followers straight to the original report.

The original ‘Free Willy’ follows a troubled preteen who finds his purpose helping to free an aging orca that was captured from the wild and put into a local aquarium as a tourist attraction. Released in 1993, the film became a global phenomenon, grossing $153.7 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. It currently holds a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it a formulaic but emotionally affecting adventure.

‘Free Willy’ spawned multiple theatrical sequels, an animated television series, and a direct-to-video continuation. The film, which starred an orca named Keiko in the title role, also helped dispel myths about killer whales and inspired real-world activism around their captivity. Two decades later, the documentary ‘Blackfish’ reignited that same conversation, fueling further pushback against aquariums and marine theme parks.

On the producing side, AGBO’s Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting will lead the film, with the Russo brothers serving as executive producers alongside Lauren Shuler Donner, who has been attached to the franchise since the original 1993 release. Courtney Baker is co-producing, while Jesse Ehrman and Cate Adams are overseeing the project on behalf of the studio.

Kunze previously started her career as a creative executive at Marvel Television, working on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and ‘Daredevil,’ and most recently served as co-executive producer on Netflix’s ‘The Boroughs.’ Bartlett made her feature directorial debut on ‘Miller’s Girl,’ which she also wrote, and created the upcoming Netflix series ‘Icebreaker.’ This marks the franchise’s first big screen return in 16 years since its last installment.
