Even though the final season of Squid Game was impressive, some fans couldn’t ignore a major problem: the English dubbing, especially for the VIP characters. The VIPs, who watched the brutal tournament, didn’t sit well with viewers because their dialogue and performances felt off.

These awkward moments were noticeable enough to almost affect the whole show, since the VIPs play an important role in the last season. Now, Bryan Bucco, the actor who played one of the VIPs, has revealed why their voices sounded so strange, because some of them were actually dubbed over.

After a TikTok video criticized the VIPs’ acting, Bucco explained that the voice fans heard for his character wasn’t his own. “Those are the English dubs,” he said. “I was the actual actor. What’s being played here isn’t my voice.”

He made sure to say he wasn’t blaming the voice actor who did the dubbing. Bucco admitted he didn’t understand why they replaced his voice. “It seems they did use voice actors to try and sound like us. I don’t even want to shit on my voice actor either because I think he did fine, I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him to say his lines either haha.”

Interestingly, Bucco mentioned that some versions of the show still have his real voice, while others use the dubbed voices. “I’ve seen different clips floating around where some have my voice, and others that are clearly not me,” he said. “It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Just if it sounds dubbed, that’s because it probably is. And the ones used in this video above ARE the dubbed voices.”

Bryan Bucco plays the American VIP wearing an eagle mask. In the TikTok comments, he agreed with fans who said the VIPs didn’t add much to the story. “I agree. They didn’t further the story or compliment it well,” he wrote in response to someone calling the VIPs “useless.”

Bucco isn’t sure why the dubbing happened, but guessed that maybe Netflix was involved. He also said he watched a version on a pirated site that didn’t have the dubbed voices. “I think whoever is contracted to do the dubbing, does ALL of the dubbing. That will always be the default English dub. The Korean version shouldn’t have English dubs. If there are some in the Korean version, it would have to be due to specific lines having to be re-recorded for clarity.”

Fans hoping to see Bucco’s character again might get a chance, maybe with his real voice next time. For a full look at Squid Game’s ending, you can check out our full breakdown.
