On the latest episode of Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of Wednesday, shared some exciting news. They are working on a brand-new animated Addams Family movie for Amazon MGM Studios. This movie will be a complete reboot and won’t be connected to the Netflix Wednesday series starring Jenna Ortega.

Gough explained their plan, saying, “We’re working on it with Amazon MGM and with Kevin Miserocchi who runs the Addams Foundation, he knew Charles Addams and the keeper of the Addams flame, and with Gail Berman and John Glickman. We’re rebooting the animated film franchise. So it won’t have anything to do with the two films before it, nor is it connected with this show. It will be a brand new Addams feature. There’s not really much we can say about it, because it’s in the very early stages.”

The podcast also gave listeners a glimpse into how Gough and Millar started working together. They met while studying at USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program. Their first big idea was an orangutan and cop buddy movie called Mango, which they sold to New Line. Later, they wrote for the original Beetlejuice movie, which was a huge success.

During the podcast, the pair talked about the challenges they faced while working on Season 2 of Wednesday, especially because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes. They also shared what inspires them and why the Addams Family has stayed popular for so long.

One interesting part was how they described writing for Wednesday herself. Gough said, “The key with her is not writing a joke, it’s writing to her world view. That’s where it lands, and that’s where it sounds fun. Anytime you reach for a joke with this character, you wind up cutting that line.”

They made it clear that Wednesday isn’t your typical young detective like Veronica Mars. Instead, she’s driven to solve mysteries because she feels someone is being wronged or a truth is being hidden. “She also sticks up for the underdog,” said Gough.

Gough also reflected on Wednesday’s character growth, saying, “Wednesday came in fully formed. And she has to learn that the world works in shades of grey.”

This new animated Addams Family movie is shaping up to be a fresh take on the classic characters, separate from the recent Netflix show. Fans will have to wait and see what Gough and Millar bring to this reboot as it’s still early days.
