‘Wednesday’ Returns: Season 3 Confirmed, Spin-Off Is Being Discussed
Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton are back together, and they’re talking all things Wednesday, from the confirmed third season to the idea of a new spin-off series that might be in the works.
Ortega became a breakout star after Wednesday exploded on Netflix, pulling in more than 250 million views globally. Now, she’s returning for Season 3, and the team behind the show confirmed a spin-off series is being discussed.
The show’s creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, said there’s definitely interest in building out the world of Wednesday beyond the main series. Gough said, “It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at.” Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria added, “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”
Jenna said that this time around, the studio gave them more space to be creative and expand the scope. “Netflix has a lot more trust this time. We were able to do things on a grander scale and take more time with scenes,” she explained. She also teased new cast members like Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper.
Season 2 is already finished and set to release on August 6. But fans can now also look forward to a third season, though there’s no release date yet.
Tim Burton, who directed both Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, said he never really expected to return to television, but he was drawn to the character of Wednesday. “As much as a middle-aged man could feel like a teenage Wednesday Addams, I feel those things,” he said.
Jenna first auditioned to play Wednesday when she was 14, for an animated film, and didn’t get the part. She told her mom back then, “That would be cool to be her, though.”
Tim added that casting her in the live-action show was everything. “If we didn’t find Wednesday, there is no show,” he said. He felt Jenna had the right mix of strength and mystery. “You can become a lot of different things as an actor. But for Wednesday, you have to have it.”
Season 1’s huge success came with some controversy, though. After the show aired, Jenna said in a podcast interview that she changed some of her lines during filming because they didn’t feel right for the character. That caused a wave of backlash online. Jenna now says she regrets how she phrased it.
“I mean, I felt terrible. In no way did I mean to come across that way,” she said. “All I needed to say was, ‘I improvise.’”
Gough said Jenna was always involved and gave great notes. “She’s very involved, and she has a 360-degree view of things that, frankly, you don’t find with most actors,” he said. She’s also now listed as a producer on the show.
As for how long the series might continue, nobody really has a clear answer. Gough and Millar think there’s enough story to cover seven years of Wednesday’s school life at Nevermore Academy. But Jenna has also said she wants to try other projects and maybe direct in the future.
Tim said he doesn’t really think in terms of seasons. “You’re talking to two of the worst people to ask that question,” he joked. And if she ever decided to leave the show early, it would feel pretty on brand for the Wednesday character, who’s known for walking away from situations when she’s done with them.
There’s no official word on what the spin-off series would look like or who it would follow, but the creative team is clearly thinking beyond just Wednesday herself.
With Season 2 on the way in August, and Season 3 officially greenlit, fans of Wednesday can rest easy, there’s plenty more to come. And while it’s still early, the idea of a spin-off means this world may be expanding in new and unexpected ways.
As for Jenna and Tim, their creative bond seems stronger than ever, even if they’re both still a little weirded out by the whole interview thing.
“I’m a creep,” Jenna joked. “You’re never not being watched by me.”
