What Audiences Should Know About the ‘Whalefall’ Post Credits Scene

‘Whalefall’ reached theaters this week, and one of the first questions from audiences has been whether the post credits scene is worth staying for. Fans started asking soon after release, and many compared the film to ‘Street Fighter’, which featured a mid credits scene.

The question is a fair one given how common bonus footage has become. Many modern releases, especially franchise entries, add extra footage to tease future installments or give audiences bonus content. This guide covers the post credits scene situation for ‘Whalefall’ alongside the story, the cast and the early critical response.

What the ‘Whalefall’ Post Credits Scene Status Means for Your Visit

The film does not include a post credits, mid credits or end credits scene, so audiences are free to leave once the credits begin. A separate credits tracker also lists no extras either during or after the credits.

Filmmakers sometimes use bonus scenes to resolve open plot questions or tease another installment, but this story appears self contained with no loose ends. That suits a film built around one desperate situation rather than a larger shared universe.

Staying seated still gives viewers the chance to read the names of everyone who worked on the movie. For those planning around showtimes, the film runs 106 minutes.

The ‘Whalefall’ Cast and Story Behind the Question

Following the death of his father, Jay Gardiner goes diving off the central coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. Trapped inside with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay realizes the lessons his father taught him may be the key to his escape.

Austin Abrams plays Jay, with Josh Brolin as his father Mitt, Elisabeth Shue as Zara Gardiner, John Ortiz as Hewey and Jane Levy as Eva Gardiner. Emily Rudd also appears in the cast.

Brian Duffield directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Daniel Kraus, who wrote the novel of the same name. Imagine Entertainment struck a pre-emptive rights deal in August 2023, before the book was published, and 20th Century Studios won the project after a bidding war.

The film opens in wide release in the United States on October 16, after arriving in several international markets on October 14 and 15.

How ‘Whalefall’ Reviews and Critical Reception Stack Up

Early reviews placed the film at 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 6.8 out of 10. Its Metacritic score landed in the low 60s.

What critics appreciate most is that the film commits fully to its absurd premise instead of winking at it. Inverse called it an effective B movie survival thriller that delivers exactly what its premise promises, with Abrams as the key to its success.

The response has not been uniform. Dread Central praised Abrams and the nightmarish setting but pointed to clunky pacing and an abundance of CG. The Boston Globe awarded two stars and argued the film leans too heavily on its father and son emotional material.

The Bulwark also cautioned that the film is not for the weak of stomach, noting moments of mutilation that edge toward torture porn.

Sequel Prospects and the Road Ahead for ‘Whalefall’

No sequel has been announced, and any decision will likely depend on box office performance and critical reception. Without a bonus scene pointing the way, the film presents itself as a complete story.

The film had a quiet start to its marketing. Duffield told The Hollywood Reporter that he loved that no one knew they existed when the project arrived at CinemaCon with modest buzz. One writer who saw the footage there described several minutes of someone slowly being consumed underwater as among the most disturbing things they had seen.

A second trailer later showed far more of what happens inside the whale, including other sea creatures still alive in there as Jay’s oxygen disappears. The film also arrives roughly a month after Abrams starred in another high tension thriller, ‘Resident Evil’.

With no mid credits tease to send audiences home speculating, did the self contained story of Jay Gardiner and his father feel like the right way for ‘Whalefall’ to end, or did you walk out wishing the film had left one more door open beneath the water?
