What Happens to Dwight’s Girlfriend Margaret in ‘Tulsa King’ and What It Means for the General

The question of whether Dwight’s girlfriend Margaret survives has hung over ‘Tulsa King’ since the fourth season began. Margaret Devereaux, played by Dana Delany, is a ranch owner and political operative who became Dwight’s girlfriend, while Cal Thresher is the Oklahoma governor and a sometime rival. Both characters sit at the center of the season’s biggest turn.

The premiere, titled “W.W.D.D.,” arrived on Paramount+ on October 16. It settled the matter in its closing minutes. Here is a clear look at what happened to Margaret in ‘Tulsa King’, how the show confirmed it, and why the people behind the series chose this path.

Dwight’s Girlfriend Margaret in the Season 4 Premiere

Margaret entered the new season in good health. She remained alive through the third season even as danger closed in around Dwight. She also spent much of that run helping Cal Thresher win the governor’s office.

The premiere’s most disturbing development begins when Thresher invites Margaret to join him at a governors’ conference in the Mariana Islands. The two board a private plane, and everyone aboard, including the pilots, falls asleep mid-flight.

The plane crashes, killing Dwight’s girlfriend and the sitting governor, and the episode ends with Dwight waking up to learn the news. The aircraft went down over the Pacific Ocean. It is a quiet and abrupt finish to an hour that was mostly built around setup.

How ‘Blind Rooster’ Confirms Margaret’s Fate

The premiere left some room for doubt, because the two characters were only presumed dead at first. With Margaret and Cal presumed dead after the crash, Dwight struggles to find answers.

The second episode removes that doubt. It confirms that the premiere’s shocker was no fakeout and that both characters are indeed dead. In the episode titled “Blind Rooster,” a stunned Dwight grieves his girlfriend while his crew tries to help him find a way forward.

Dwight spends much of the hour burying himself in work before he finally faces his grief in the closing scene, and one recap highlights the moment he listens to Margaret’s voicemail. It is a restrained piece of storytelling that lets the loss land without much commentary.

The crash itself remains unexplained, and the episode does not connect the deaths to the threats facing Dwight’s business. One recap raises the theory that someone who benefits from Thresher’s removal may have wanted him gone, since Clark could inherit the governorship if he dies.

Why Stallone and Winter Chose Margaret’s Death

In an interview with TVLine, Sylvester Stallone said the loss grew out of a guiding question he shared with head writer Terence Winter, “How do we make Dwight an underdog again?” The answer, it seems, was to take away the person who made his life feel secure.

Stallone explained that Dwight had become too successful, which made the show feel redundant and predictable, so he looked to Rocky Balboa for a model. He pointed to the death of Rocky’s wife Adrian before the sequel ‘Rocky Balboa’, calling it brutal but necessary because it forced the fighter to confront grief and loneliness.

Stallone also said the deaths were his idea and part of a larger plan connected to the recently announced fifth season. In an exclusive conversation with TV Insider, returning showrunner Terence Winter contended that the crux of ‘Tulsa King’ is the constancy of change.

Winter, whose credits include ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ returned as head writer and executive producer this season. His presence helps explain why the show is willing to make such a sharp turn so early.

What Margaret’s Absence Means for Dwight’s Grief

Stallone says Dwight is now tortured by his survival, turning to church and asking himself whether he caused the tragedy. That shift gives the character a vulnerable, searching side that the earlier seasons rarely explored.

In the third episode Dwight tries to get back to work as if nothing had happened, and his team notices how prickly he has become. A warning comes that if he does not deal with his emotions he will rot from the inside out, and he eventually takes that advice to heart.

That same episode finds his business operations being shut down by the state government. The season is expected to run through Dec. 18, and a fifth season has already been picked up by Paramount+.

Margaret’s death has turned a story about building an empire into one about grief, suspicion and rebuilding from the ground up. Tell us in the comments whether you believe the plane crash that took Margaret and Cal was an accident or whether one of Dwight’s enemies had a hand in it.
