What Prime Video’s ‘Drive The Pretenders’ Draws On and What It Means for the Film

Prime Video will release ‘Drive The Pretenders’ worldwide on October 28, with the film described as a German language production. The story follows a young race car mechanic who pretends to be engaged to the most scandalous racing star on the scene, officially to protect his reputation and secretly to win her own chance behind the wheel.

Viewers curious about where this story started will find a clear answer. ‘Drive The Pretenders’ is inspired by the Wattpad novel Drive by Tamara Lush, and that origin shapes much of what the film is trying to do.

The Source Material Behind ‘Drive The Pretenders’

The film takes its inspiration from Drive, a hit Wattpad novel by author Tamara Lush. Lush later extended her The Pretenders series into a trilogy with the follow up books Crash and Burn, which suggests the property has room to grow if the film finds an audience.

According to Bavaria Fiction, this is the first Wattpad adaptation conceived in Germany for the global market. That detail positions the project as more than a local release. Sergej Moya directed the film, while Chris Silber and Malina Nwabuonwor co wrote the screenplay.

The film also arrives with a clear commercial context. Amazon Prime Video has already built large young adult romance successes with ‘Maxton Hall’ and ‘Culpa Mia’, and this adaptation was announced as an effort to build on that momentum. German coverage has described it as a successor to ‘Maxton Hall’, and like that series it is an enemies to lovers story.

Cast and Characters in the Racing Romance

Lisa-Marie Koroll plays mechanic Sarah Jenkins, while Amin Baahmed plays racing star Dante Annunziata. The two characters sit at opposite ends of the sport, and the story is built around that contrast.

Sarah works in the male dominated world of motorsport and dreams of sitting behind the wheel herself. Dante is a former Formula 1 star who was thrown off course by the death of his sister, and he has since been making headlines mostly through his escapades.

His management wants to repair his damaged image and hires Sarah to play his fiancée, which gives the arrangement a public purpose for him and a career purpose for her. What begins as a practical alliance gradually turns into genuine feelings.

The supporting cast includes Gustav Schmidt, Mišel Matičević, Lucie Heinze, Frederic Linkemann, Inka Friedrich, Jeanette Hain, Philippe Brenninkmeyer, Steven Gätjen, Pati Valpati and Leslie Malton.

Production and Filming Locations

The production took place in Prague and the surrounding areas, and also used the racing circuits in Brno, Most and Hockenheim, along with locations in Frankfurt and along the Amalfi Coast. Filming ran from September to early November. That mix of real racetracks and scenic coastline points to a film that wants the sport to feel authentic while keeping the romance visually rich.

The project marks the first collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Bavaria Fiction for Prime Video. It is a production by Bavaria Fiction in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios Germany.

The fake engagement is meant to advance both characters, until their growing closeness begins to blur the terms of the agreement. Bavaria Fiction describes the story as a fateful encounter between an aspiring mechanic and a famous but fallen race car driver, with passion igniting on and off the track.

Release Date and How to Watch on Prime Video

‘Drive The Pretenders’ will be available exclusively on Prime Video worldwide from October 28. Amazon published the official trailer on October 19, giving audiences about a week to see the tone of the film before it streams.

Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $14.99 monthly or $139 annually in the United States. Pricing in other regions varies, so viewers outside the United States should check their local Amazon site.

Prime Video Germany lists the film among the top highlights of its October lineup, alongside several other Prime Originals. For a project aimed at a global audience, that prominent placement shows how much weight the platform is putting behind it. Readers who have followed the Wattpad novel, or who came to ‘Maxton Hall’ and ‘Culpa Mia’ through the same streaming pipeline, may want to say whether a fake engagement between a mechanic and a fallen Formula 1 star can carry a film the way it carried the book.
