‘Wheel of Fortune’ announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended from the show following an incident on a commercial flight in May, when a passenger expressed concerns about Thornton to a flight attendant, according to Variety. TMZ reported that “sources with direct knowledge tell us the pilot called ahead to have law enforcement meet Thornton when they arrived at the gate.”

Sony Pictures Television Studios confirmed Thornton’s suspension in a statement, saying, “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune ‘, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.” The studio did not provide further details about the specific allegations or the scope of the ongoing investigation.

American Airlines confirmed to multiple outlets that an incident did take place on one of its flights that same day, though the airline did not mention Thornton by name in its statement. “On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard,” the airline said.

Police reportedly questioned Thornton after the flight landed, though he was not taken into custody and was eventually released, according to TMZ’s reporting. During the incident, Thornton was reportedly wearing his “Wheel of Fame” jacket, a detail that has circulated alongside the broader story.

Thornton, 66, has served as the voice of ‘Wheel of Fortune’ since 2010 or 2011 depending on the source, stepping into the role following the death of original announcer Charlie O’Donnell, who passed away at age 78 that same year. His steady presence had made him one of the most familiar voices in daytime television over the past decade and a half.
