When and Where Does Tulsa King Take Place? Explained

Tulsa King is a new crime drama show starring Sylvester Stallone. I’ll follow the life of a mobster named Dwight Manfredi, who’s trying to reestablish himself in the business. Only this time, he’s setting up shop in a completely different town than what he’s used to. So, when and where does Tulsa King take place?

Tulsa King takes place in New York City first and then moves to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Manfredi’s been in prison for 25 years, and when he’s out, it seems to be in the present day. Granted, it wasn’t explicitly stated in the trailer, but modern technology and architecture suggest so.

The show will premiere on November 13, 2022, so we don’t know all the details about the plot yet, but there’s more than enough info out there to get us excited for the show. Keep reading to find out more about Tulsa King.

Tulsa King: A brief synopsis

As I’ve mentioned, Tulsa King is the newest Sylvester Stallone role, where he portrays an American-Italian mafia capo, Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi. Following a run-in with the law, the New York City-based mobster served 25 years in prison.

Upon his release, Manfredi realizes that there’s been a shift in his crime family’s hierarchy. His boss has a different plan for him and exiles The General to Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s a completely different state – and a completely different world – for Manfredi.

Tulsa is a much more rural place, and it’s hard for him to adapt, especially after realizing that his bosses might not have his best interest – or well-being, for that matter – in their minds. So, he starts to build his own criminal empire, slowly gathering a crew of seeming misfits to help him along the way. It seems the show will have more than one season, so there’s plenty of room to build up the story and create an amazing show.

Where does Tulsa King take place?

The show starts off in New York City, where Dwight Manfredi was once a big-shot mafia capo. However, after being in prison for 25 years, he meets up with his NYC crime family, who decides to send him to another location.

That’s when Tulsa King actually starts taking place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We still occasionally go back to New York to see what’s going on with the mobsters there as we watch their plan to sabotage Manfredi unravels.

For those who don’t know, the reason why the transition from NYC to Tulsa is so hard for The General it’s because the two places might as well be different worlds. Oklahoma is mostly a rural state, with one of – if not the lowest – population density in the entire US (that is, residents per square kilometer.

New York, on the other hand, is one of – if not the highest populated states in the US. Manfredi knew the game there and had his connections and people. In Tulsa, he knows nobody, has no connections, and has no support from his previous crime family. He has to start from scratch.

Whether there will be more locations in the show is still unknown, but I’m sure that going from the East Coast to the midwest will be just enough.

When does Tulsa King take place?

Most of the mafia-related shows, it seems, takes place around the 80s or the 90s. That’s when the genre was at its finest. So, when does Tulsa King take place? Well, unlike most shows, it seems that Tulsa King takes place in the modern-day US.

We know that Dwight Manfredi was in prison for 25 years. The trailer and the official synopsis don’t reveal when exactly he was incarcerated, but there are obvious hints that show we’re in the present when he gets out.

The cars, architecture, and technology are all very modern, with touch-screen phones, etc., as we can see in the trailer when two mobsters speak on the phone. The exact year is unknown, but one thing is certain – maybe the technology modernized, but Manfredi is still an old-school gangster, wielding bats and getting things done.
