Where Is Love & Death Filmed? Filming Locations Revealed

True crime documentaries and shows are all the noise lately – even with several shows revolving around the same topic being released in close proximity. After 2022’s Candy, HBO Max is set to release a show based on the same true crime case called Love & Death. The premise is set in Wylie, Texas, but where was Love & Death actually filmed?
Love & Death was filmed mainly in a sound studio in Kyle, Texas, while live shooting was predominantly done in Austin, Texas. That being said, other spots around Texas were used, including Wylie (where the real case took place), Seguin, Hutoo, Kerrville, Lockhart, and other towns in the state.
If you haven’t heard about the case of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore, brace yourselves – because it’s a hell of a ride! Elizabeth Olsen will portray the main character, so we’re all set for an insanely awesome show. She’s got some big shoes to fill, though, as Jessica Biel was masterful in Candy (2022), but let’s explore Love & Death a bit more while we await its release.
What is Love & Death about?
Love & Death is an HBO Max original limited series consisting of six episodes, based on a 1980s case from Wylie, Texas. Another show about the same case – Candy (2022), was released by Hulu, with Jessica Biel in the lead role.
In Love & Death, however, Elizabeth Olsen is set to depict Candy Montgomery, a Wyle, Texas housewife who was accused of murdering one of her best friends, Betty Gore, with an axe.
The official synopsis for the film on IMDb states: “Two churchgoing couples enjoy small-town family life in Texas – until somebody picks up an axe.”
That’s the shortest summation of the story about Candy Montgomery you can have. The longer story is that Candy was a small-town housewife, seemingly happy on all fronts, and very well-beloved and included in her community. But the reality was Candy had more than one secret. I won’t spoil it, but it’s a riveting story.
What I am going to say, however, is that Love & Death is created by the same producers of Big Little Lies and The Undoing – both of which were, in my humble opinion, insanely awesome shows.
Also, Love & Death will be based on Jim Atkinson and John Bloom’s Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs and Love & Death In Silicon Prairie, Part I and Part II, respectively.
The cast is phenomenal, the production is top-class, and the story is ‘killer’ – so there’s no reason to believe the show won’t be outstanding. Now, how about the locations where the show was filmed?
All Love & Death Filming locations
Wylie, Texas
Although not that much of the filming took place in Wylie, Texas, the real-life story happened in that particular small Texas town in the 1980s, so naturally, some scenes for Love & Death were, in fact, shot there, if we were to believe the show’s official IMDb page.
Wylie is a small suburban city in the northeastern suburbs of Dallas. It was once solely a part of Collin County but has since expanded, and parts of it are now in Dallas County and Rockwall County. In its history, Wylie was best known as the Onion Capital of the World, famous for its sweet white onions.
Kyle, Texas
Kyle, Texas, was the location where most of the filming took place – not in the town itself, per se, but rather in a sound studio. According to sources, the studio included entire sets like homes, churches, and other indoor settings, while period-specific props, clothes, and other stuff were collected locally.
As for the town itself, Kyle is a small town in Texas – specifically, in Hays County. Kyle is considered one of the fastest-growing towns in Texas, with its population nearly doubling between 2010 and 2020.
Austin, Texas
A lot of live-action shooting – especially outdoor scenes – was done in Austin, Texas. Austin is the capital city of Texas, although it’s not nearly the largest. It is, however, the largest city in Travis County, spreading partially across Hays and Williamson Counties as well.
Austin’s Metropolitan area has almost 2.5 million inhabitants, whereas the city is around a million.
Many locations around the city have been recognized in the show, such as the Aristocrat Lounge, Austin State Hospital, the Christ Lutheran Church, Queenswood Drive, etc.
Other Texas locations
As you can probably tell already, the entire show was shot in Texas, US – the same state where the true story took place, which gives the entire show much more authenticity. While most of the shooting took place in Kyle and Austin, other Texas locations played a role in the creation of the show.
For instance, the Lutheran church in Hutto, Texas, was one of the filming locations. Another one was St. Peter’s Church in Coupland, and in that same town, the crew filmed in the Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall.
Some scenes were shot at the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville and the University Inn in San Marcos. Various locations in and around Seguin also played a vital role in creating the show. In contrast, the Williamson County Courthouse and the Justice Center in Georgetown, Texas, were mainly used for the trial scenes.
Other locations included the towns of Smithville, La Grange, Buda, and Killeen – mainly, the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport.
When & where will Love & Death be released?
As mentioned, Love & Death is an original HBO Max series, so naturally, it will be available exclusively on HBO Max. The show’s first three episodes will premiere on April 27, 2023, and then the following three episodes will be released weekly, one per week, until the finale on May 25.
