Where Is Thing 2? ‘The Cat in the Hat’ Just Took Its Strangest Marketing Mystery to the Streets
Warner Bros. has spent months teasing a very specific question about its animated reboot of ‘The Cat in the Hat’, and fans still don’t have an answer. Every trailer for the Bill Hader-led film has featured Dr. Seuss’s famously chaotic Things, yet one of the most recognizable members of the bunch has been noticeably absent.
In the first teaser, the Cat pulls his iconic red crate out of his hat, only for Thing 1 to emerge alongside Thing 3, followed by a whole crowd of Things numbering all the way up to Thing 18. Thing 2, the other half of the book’s legendary duo, was nowhere to be seen.
Now the mystery has spilled into the real world. DiscussingFilm shared footage of Thing 1 and Thing 3 apparently searching for their missing companion ahead of the movie’s release, with the costumed pair wandering a city street at night and posing beneath the canopy of a Chevron gas station.
The clips show the 2 blue-haired troublemakers in their signature red outfits, with their numbers clearly visible on their chests and signs dangling from their necks. In one shot, a passerby strolls right past them, seemingly unbothered by the giant Seussian creatures loitering on the sidewalk.

It’s a playful stunt that leans directly into the joke Warner Bros. has been building all summer. Thing 2’s absence from the trailers has clearly been treated as part of a deliberate bait-and-switch gag rather than an oversight.
The missing Thing has been fueling online chatter ever since the first footage arrived. TikTok creators have posted videos asking why only Thing 1 and Thing 3 show up in the trailers, while others have floated a villain theory suggesting Thing 2 might be hiding a darker role.

One children’s book blogger guessed back in June that Thing 2 may have gone missing and that the Cat and the kids head out to find him. The same writer pointed out that the extra Things aren’t entirely unprecedented, since the graphic novel ‘Thing One and Thing Two Have Homework to Do’ introduces Thing Three and Thing Four.
Director Erica Rivinoja has previously described the Things as an extra layer of chaos piled on top of the Cat’s own mayhem, while still being very cute. Judging by the trailers, the movie is fully committing to that idea.

The new adaptation sees the Cat lose his magic hat and team up with 2 homesick siblings, Gabby and Sebastian, to track down a lost time travel gadget. Their adventure takes them through a colorful world of memories, with the future of the universe potentially at stake, as the Cat tries to convince the kids that a new home means new memories.
Hader voices the title character and also serves as an executive producer. The voice cast includes Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Paula Pell, Tiago Martinez, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Bowen Yang and Tituss Burgess, with Berry voicing the family’s newly talkative fish.

Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja direct the film, with DNEG Animation serving as the studio’s animation partner. The project has seen its fair share of delays, originally landing a March date before being moved to February and then pushed back 9 months.
The film is the first in a planned Warner Bros. Pictures Animation series of Dr. Seuss movies, with a ‘Thing One and Thing Two’ spinoff and an adaptation of ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ also in the works. That makes the Things’ starring role in the marketing feel less like a gimmick and more like a launchpad.

‘The Cat in the Hat’ arrives in theaters and IMAX across North America on November 6, with an international rollout starting November 4. Until then, it seems Thing 1 and Thing 3 will keep wandering the streets looking for their lost friend.
