One of the things we always knew about Marc Spector throughout the entirety of the Moon Knight series is that he has been battling with his dissociative identity disorder (DID), especially when it comes to his relationship with the more passive Steven Grant. Marc and Steven did eventually have a better relationship, but the final episode revealed a third personality that neither Marc nor Steven were aware of. So, who is Marc Spector’s third personality?

Marc Spector’s third personality is Jake Lockley. In the comics, Jake is the personality that Marc takes on whenever he wants to get closer to the criminal underworld because this personality works as a cab driver. Jake Lockley has been shown to be the most brutal and most dangerous of Marc’s personalities.

The introduction of Jake Lockley in Moon Knight opens up a ton of possibilities for the character and what Moon Knight’s future could be in the MCU. Jake showing up truly gives us a twist that we didn’t expect in that final episode when Marc and Steven thought that they had already escaped Khonshu’s shackles. So, with that said, let’s look at what we know about Jake Lockley.

Does Marc Spector Have A Third Personality?

When Moon Knight was announced, it was never a secret that the character was suffering from dissociative identity disorder (DID), which is a mental disorder that allows him to assume multiple identities in one body. We saw this early in the series when Moon Knight introduced Steven Grant before it even introduced Marc Spector.

Throughout the entire series, Marc and Steven battled for control over the body because neither of them wanted the other to get his way. This became a focal point for the plot of the series as it was a struggle for the two personalities to try to work together while finding a way to stop Harrow from unleashing Ammit. However, throughout the entire series, we were hinted at the possibility of the existence of a third personality.

There were moments when Steven or Marc would black out, only to find that they had already killed people during the time when they weren’t conscious. In some instances, we were made to believe that it was Marc who was responsible for some of those killings because, after all, he is a mercenary who isn’t afraid of killing people whenever he needs to.

However, there were instances where neither of them was aware of what had happened. And there was even a scene in the afterlife wherein Marc was about to open a second sarcophagus after releasing Steven from his own sarcophagus.

So, what does that all mean for Marc and his DID? Does it mean that Marc Spector actually has a third personality as well?

As a matter of fact, yes, Marc Spector has a third personality he has no idea about. This personality was revealed during the post-credits scene of the final episode of Moon Knight when Khonshu revealed to Harrow that there was another Marc Spector personality that now served as his sole avatar. This personality was the one who wheeled Harrow out of the psychiatric hospital and killed him after a short conversation with Khonshu, who told him that he didn’t need anyone else as his avatar because he had his friend, Jake Lockley.

Now, take note that Marvel Studios made a conscious effort to give hints about the existence of this third personality named Jake. And only fans who actually kept their eyes and ears open would understand that Marc Spector, as Khonshu said, was more broken than he ever realized.

“We knew right from the beginning that fans were going to be on the lookout for references and clues that Jake Lockley is going to appear in the show,” head writer Jeremy Slater said via Marvel.com. The creative team realized that Marvel super fans — and ones familiar with the comics — would be searching for anything pointing to him, and made the decision to not worry about surprising fans who would be dissecting every single scene. Rather, the team focused on “everyone else who’s totally unfamiliar with the character and the dynamic,” recognizing “we have to make sure that the mystery works as satisfying for the newcomers to the Moon Knight story.”

“We were intentionally planting the seed,” director Justin Benson added. “You’re trying to ride this line of it being like, the mystery that may not mean a lot to people that don’t know the Moon Knight canon super well. But that when you see the coffin, there’s that the movement and sound coming from it that may even feel like something supernatural or demonic. While also trying to ride this line that it’s not literally going to be a creature from the descent popping out. It’s going to be a person later. But trying to make it feel so dangerous; just a beat, a feeling there’s something extraordinarily dangerous.”

Jake’s presence in Moon Knight is also the reason why Khonshu didn’t seem to be very worried about releasing Marc and Steven as his avatars. He did make a promise to release the duo from their pact with him, but Khonshu’s promise didn’t extend to Jake, who is an entirely different identity from Marc and Steven. As such, Jake serves as the sole avatar of Khonshu after he releases Marc and Steven from their role as the Moon Knight.

Who Is Jake Lockley?

Now that it has been established that there was always a third Marc Spector personality hiding deep within the character’s psyche, just who exactly is Jake Lockley?

As of now, the MCU version of Jake still has a somewhat unclear background, considering that it has only been recently that he was finally unveiled. His background and origins might get some explanation later, depending on the future of the Moon Knight series. As such, most of what we know about Jake Lockley is based on the comics.

In the comics, we all know that Marc Spector knows how to use his different identities for different purposes. Marc is the heroic mercenary that fights crime. Meanwhile, Steven Grant is the billionaire personality that he uses as a means to get chummy with the media and to fund Moon Knight’s different exploits. Then there’s Jake Lockley.

Because of the very fact that Moon Knight works as a street-level vigilante, not unlike Batman in DC, he has to have a way to understand the streets more. That is where Jake Lockley comes in as the personality that he uses to get closer to the streets.

In the comics, Jake Lockley is a cab driver personality that Marc Spector assumes whenever he needs someone to get close to the criminal underworld. Cab drivers in large cities tend to be familiar with what’s happening on the streets, and that is what Jake’s purpose is. He is closer to the streets than any of the other personalities, and that is how he was able to build a network of criminal informants and assets that he could use to get information.

On top of the fact that Jake Lockley is closer to the criminal underworld than any of the other Marc Spector personalities, he is also described as the most brutal of the personalities. While Marc is the best fighter because of his status as a mercenary, Jake is the most dangerous because he doesn’t have a moral compass.

This lack of a moral compass as shown in the Moon Knight series when both Marc and Steven were hesitant to kill people that they didn’t need to kill. But Jake took over to take the killing blow, much to the confusion of both Marc and Steven.
