‘Outer Banks’ has spent four seasons building JJ Maybank into one of its most emotionally complicated characters, and much of that complexity traces back to his home life. Fans have long known him as the son of a violent, absent father, but the show’s fourth season upended that history entirely.

The character everyone assumed was JJ’s biological dad turns out to be something far more complicated, and the reveal forces a reevaluation of nearly everything viewers thought they understood about JJ’s upbringing.

Luke Maybank’s Role As JJ’s Father Figure

Luke Maybank is a minor antagonist turned supporting character in ‘Outer Banks,’ portrayed by actor Gary Weeks. He proves to be a poor parent for JJ throughout the series and often engages in criminal activity, including abandoning JJ while running from authorities in season two.

Luke Maybank struggles with addiction and alcoholism, and those struggles caused constant tension between him and JJ, feeding into JJ’s own impulsive streak. Luke reluctantly bails JJ out of jail on one occasion and then demands that JJ pay his restitution fee, only to steal the money once JJ collects it.

Despite the dysfunction, the relationship was never simply one sided. JJ is scared of his father and eventually fights back and runs away, spending most of his time with the Pogues rather than at home. Even so, JJ loves his father and desires to have a good relationship with him, and in season two he helps Luke leave the island, crying when his father hugs him goodbye.

Gary Weeks and His Career Beyond ‘Outer Banks’

Gary Weeks is currently best known for his role as JJ’s trouble making father Luke Maybank on ‘Outer Banks,’ with a credited career spanning over 20 years and more than 150 film, TV, and commercial roles. He is also known for playing Nick Newport Jr. in ‘Parks and Recreation,’ along with roles in ‘Spider-Man Homecoming’ and ‘Instant Family.’

Weeks has also written, produced, and directed award winning short films that have collected more than 100 awards over the years. He was raised in rural Morris, Georgia, where he developed a love for movies and basketball, winning two state championships in high school before eventually studying at the University of Georgia.

His work as Luke has become the role most associated with him among the current streaming audience, largely because of how central the character became to JJ’s arc once the show reached its final stretch.

JJ Maybank’s True Parentage Revealed

The biggest twist in JJ’s history did not involve Luke’s parenting at all, but rather his blood. During season four, Luke reveals to JJ that he is not his biological father, and that a man named Chandler Groff is JJ’s real father. Luke explains that the baby who supposedly drowned along with a woman named Larissa Genrette was actually JJ himself.

According to the fuller backstory, Luke grew up on the Cut and at one point worked for the Genrette family on Goat Island, where he witnessed the troubled marriage between Larissa and Chandler. Chandler eventually showed up at Luke’s home with the baby, asking Luke to take him in temporarily, and Luke agreed. Luke later learned that Larissa had reportedly died in a boating accident along with that same baby, a story that turned out to be a lie, since she had actually been killed by Chandler.

Chandler then paid Luke to stay quiet about the situation and to let the baby continue living with him, and Luke raised JJ without ever revealing that Larissa’s son had not actually died with her. This means the man JJ resented for years as a deadbeat was, in fact, the person who kept the truth of his survival hidden in exchange for money, a detail that reframes both characters simultaneously.

The Fallout Between JJ and His Adoptive Father

Luke’s long delayed return in season four comes with the massive revelation about the truth of the Maybank family’s relationships, and Luke also tells JJ that the woman he thought was his mother had actually just been a girlfriend Luke had at the time he agreed to raise him. Before that conversation happens, JJ discovers that Luke has been living on the Cut with a character named Barracuda Mike for nearly the entire time he had been presumed missing, having only gotten as far as a few miles down the beach rather than fleeing to Belize as JJ had believed.

Luke ultimately has no choice but to go with JJ to a lighthouse to escape the authorities, which is where he finally agrees to explain the meaning behind everything JJ has just learned. ‘Outer Banks’ co-creator Shannon Burke has said that making JJ a Kook through this reveal was the most extreme twist the writers could imagine for the character, a sentiment co-creator Jonas Pate has echoed as well.

Pate has also noted that JJ’s father has always been something of a scoundrel, and that JJ initially refuses to accept the revelation once it comes out. The reveal does not erase the years of abuse JJ endured under Luke’s roof, but it does complicate the resentment JJ carried, since the man responsible for that pain was never actually obligated by blood to raise him at all.

For a show built on found family and buried secrets, the truth about JJ’s parentage might be its most consequential twist yet, and it raises the question of whether fans will ultimately see Luke Maybank as a villain, a flawed guardian, or something in between.
