There are a lot of different characters that helped shape the storylines of some of the most important persons in Vinland Saga. Of course, Einar is important to the story of Thorfinn because he has now become the secondary protagonist of the series. But we also know that certain characters, such as Lotta, were important to Einar’s storyline. So, who is she?

Lotta is the younger sister of Einar. She, Einar, and their mother lived a peaceful and simple life in northern England before Viking raiders attacked their village and killed them. Lotta was captured by one of the Vikings so that she could be sold as a slave. But she was killed when she attacked them.

The deaths of Lotta and Einar’s mother, Emma, were very important to Einar’s storyline due to how they were the ones who inspired him to keep on going with his life. As such, Einar was determined to make something out of the life given to him by working for a specific purpose instead of feeling sorry for himself. In that regard, let’s talk more about Einar’s sister.

Who Is Lotta?

The storyline of Vinland Saga is pushed forward by its main characters instead of its overarching plot. However, we also know that the characters play important parts in developing the protagonists’ stories, no matter how minor their roles are. While we know that Thorfinn is the most important character in the series, we also know that Einar plays a big role in developing Vinland Saga’s storyline because of how important he is in the character development of Thorfinn. And other characters could also play a role in Einar’s character development.

Episode 1 of season 2 started with the introduction of Einar, who used to live in a village in northern England. Note that season 1 focused on the war between Denmark and England, which means that Einar was not entirely safe from the dangers of the events unfolding throughout his country.

Einar worked on developing the family’s farm for years after his father died when he was still young. He became the man of the house and was a good farmer that tended to his family’s fields and was able to grow wheat to support the village. And he had a lot on his shoulders because he needed to be the one to provide for his family, which included his mother, Emma, and his sister, Lotta.

Lotta was one of the most important characters in Einar’s development because she pushed him to learn how to work in the fields and cultivate crops, as he needed to be a responsible big brother that could provide for his family. As such, Einar focused more on working as a farmer instead of going out to join wars and battles for the pride of the King of England.

Life seemed very good and simple for Einar and his family when they were introduced. They had each other and could enjoy the fruits of their labor on the farm. This was the kind of life that Einar wanted to have. However, Lotta and Emma were quickly taken away from him.

What Happened to Lotta?

Again, Einar happened to live when Denmark was in constant wars with England. That meant that Vikings were raiding the coasts and villages of England from time to time. And that was one of the things that Einar and his family were afraid of when living in their village.

Vikings suddenly arrived to wreak havoc in their village, and this caused the deaths of almost all of the people that Einar knew in their small settlement. The village burned as Einar saw his house and the field he had worked so hard to burn to ash. However, he and his family tried to escape by cutting through the woods.

As Lotta escaped with Einar and Emma, the Vikings caught up with them. One of the raiders struck Emma with an arrow that hit her back, as it was clear she was already done and could no longer continue. Emma told Einar to take Lotta and escape so they could still live elsewhere and continue their lives. However, Einar and Lotta were shocked by their mother’s death.

That was when the Vikings finally caught up with them. One of the Vikings took Lotta because he thought she was pretty and could fetch a good price in the slave market. But Lotta, still angry about what happened to her mother, attacked one of the Vikings that tried to take her. She freed herself from her captors by attacking him.

However, the infuriated Viking was blood-lusted, and he took his weapon out and struck a quick blow that instantly killed Lotta. One of the Vikings was disappointed that Lotta got killed as she was supposed to fetch them a good price in the slave market. Meanwhile, a stunned Einar got dragged by the Vikings so that they could sell him as a slave.

While Lotta did indeed die early in the series, her death had a profound effect on Einar. Both she and Emma wanted Einar to never give up on life because he could always rebuild and start life all over again as long as he was alive. This was something that they told him while they were sharing a meal back on their farm. And this was a message that Einar kept to heart.

Although Lotta’s death affected Einar, the young man could move on from his family’s deaths because he understood they would have wanted him to never give up on life. As such, Einar is determined to work out of slavery to be a free man and restart his life for the sake of both Lotta and Emma. This is where the difference between Einar and Thorfinn can be seen, as Einar used his fallen family to inspire him to continue with his life. At the same time, Thorfinn struggled to find a reason to keep living after Askeladd’s death.
