Why ‘Crystal Lake’ Has No Hockey Mask: Showrunner Calls the ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel the ‘Star Wars’ of Slashers

For decades, one image has defined ‘Friday the 13th’: a silent killer in a battered hockey mask. So when Peacock’s prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’ arrived, plenty of fans noticed what was missing. All 8 episodes premiered on the streamer on October 15, and the franchise’s most famous accessory is nowhere to be found.

That absence is intentional. ‘Crystal Lake’ stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, following the grieving single mother whose young son Jason drowned in the town lake about a year earlier. The story unfolds long before Jason became the slasher icon audiences know.

Now creator and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has explained exactly why the mask didn’t make the cut. Speaking with Variety, he made it clear the decision was about timeline, not legal red tape.

The ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise has a famously tangled rights history, so many fans assumed the mask had been off-limits. Kane says that wasn’t the case. “There were really no issues rights-wise with the show. We weren’t given any particular parameters about what we could and couldn’t do,” he explained. In other words, the creative team could have used the mask if it had wanted to.

He acknowledged that leaving it out wasn’t a casual choice. “There were discussions about the hockey mask, because that’s such an iconic look for Jason and that’s what everybody thinks about,” Kane said.

The real reason comes down to where ‘Crystal Lake’ sits in the timeline. Pamela is the killer in the original ‘Friday the 13th’, Jason takes over in ‘Part 2’, and he only adopts the hockey mask as his signature look in ‘Part III’.

“But we’re doing a show that predates Pamela’s murder in the first movie, and the hockey mask … obviously, we all know that didn’t come until the third movie,” Kane explained. Putting the mask in the prequel would have broken the franchise’s own continuity.

He summed it up with a memorable comparison. “This is the ‘Star Wars’ of slashers … It’s episode three,” Kane said, framing the series as a story that sets the stage for events fans already know.

Kane has fielded questions about the missing mask in several interviews leading up to the premiere. The repeated explanations show just how attached fans are to the image, even in a story focused on Jason’s mother.

Kane has said he wants to explore the town of Crystal Lake and the characters around Pamela rather than simply replay familiar beats. That approach has left room for an ensemble that includes Callum Vinson as young Jason, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins and Gwendolyn Sundstrom.

Familiar faces from the original films also appear in earlier forms. Nick Cordileone plays Ralph, while Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik play Claudette and Barry. The series took years to reach audiences. A24 first announced ‘Crystal Lake’ for Peacock in October 2022 with Bryan Fuller as showrunner, but production stalled during the 2023 writers’ strike.

Fuller later departed after A24 chose a different creative direction, and Kane was named the new showrunner in August 2024. Cameras finally rolled in New Jersey in June 2025 under the working title ‘Mama’s Boy’.

Before its streaming debut, the show screened in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Primetime program and at New York Comic Con. Peacock hasn’t yet announced whether it will return for a second season.

For now, Kane’s answer suggests fans shouldn’t expect the hockey mask unless the story moves much closer to the events of the films. Staying faithful to the timeline is clearly part of the show’s identity.

That choice may frustrate some viewers hoping for a classic Jason moment. But it also gives ‘Crystal Lake’ room to stand apart as a story about how a legend began, not a remix of its most famous imagery.

Do you agree with Crystal Lake showrunner Brad Caleb Kane’s decision to leave Jason’s iconic hockey mask out of the prequel?
