The 50th season of Survivor is gearing up to hit screens in February 2026, and it’s already creating a buzz. This milestone season will bring back a familiar face, Mike White, the creator of the hit HBO show The White Lotus, who first appeared on Survivor during its 37th season.

When it was announced in May that Mike White would be returning for this special season, fans were split. Some were thrilled to see him back on the island, while others wondered why someone so successful in Hollywood would choose to come back to the competition. Jeff Probst, the host and executive producer of Survivor, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about why White’s return made sense.

Probst said, “There is no hiding that he is the biggest writer, director, show creator in the world right now, and he wanted to come back and play Survivor. So I can understand why people had a reaction.”

Instead of focusing on why White would go back on the show, Probst thinks people should ask why he’s doing it. “I’m surprised people aren’t asking, ‘Why is one of the greatest writers in the history of Hollywood so interested in Survivor?’” Probst said.

He explained that Mike is using the experience to study human behavior, which helps him in his creative work. “He’s out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what’s going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play Survivor, you can study it.”

Probst added, “And when you watch White Lotus, what are you watching? You’re watching human behavior all day. I think that’s part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don’t understand that, maybe you’re asking the wrong question.”

The upcoming 50th season of Survivor, called “In the Hands of the Fans,” promises a lot of excitement. It will feature fan favorites from the very first season in 2000 all the way to players from the upcoming season 49. Survivor’s format is well known: contestants are split into tribes, stranded on an island, and must survive by building shelters and finding food.

They compete in mental and physical challenges, and each week someone is voted off until only one player remains. The last one standing wins the title of Sole Survivor and a $1 million prize.

Mike White first appeared on Survivor’s 37th season, known as “David vs. Goliath.” The season’s theme had the underdog “Davids” competing against the dominant “Goliaths.” White quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his humor and memorable moments, like complaining about not bringing an eye mask, drinking too much red wine at a reward, and cursing a tree after accidentally walking into it.

White finished that season in second place with three jury votes. The winner was Nick Wilson, who took home the title of Sole Survivor with seven votes.
