Wicked: For Good closes with a finale that director Jon M. Chu says is designed to challenge how audiences think about identity, choice, and what it truly means to be “good.”

Speaking about the film’s final moments, Chu explained that every major character faces a moment where they must decide which version of reality they will follow.

“I think it’s this idea that we’re both good and wicked. We’re all of these things, and every day we make a choice about which one we’re going to be,” he said.

The movie’s ending centers on what becomes of Elphaba and Glinda after Elphaba’s staged “melting” convinces all of Oz that the so-called Wicked Witch is dead.

In the aftermath of that deception, Elphaba reunites with Fiyero—who has survived in scarecrow form after she magically saved him from death. With the world believing both of them are gone, the pair leaves Oz behind and moves toward a distant desert far outside its borders.

Chu shared that the team considered portraying this wasteland as frightening, but he ultimately saw it differently. To him, the desert represents a blank space full of potential, not fear.

Meanwhile, Glinda returns to the Emerald City carrying the weight of losing her closest friend. She exposes a long-hidden truth: the Wizard is connected to Elphaba by blood. The revelation pushes him to step down and leave Oz entirely. Glinda then turns her attention to Madame Morrible, arranging for her to be imprisoned and echoing the cruel words Morrible once used against her.

From there, Glinda steps into a new role. She begins restoring order across Oz, bringing Animals back into public life and offering guidance as a leader who wants to do better than those who came before her.

She also returns the Grimmerie to the tower where Elphaba first mastered her powers. As she sings “For Good,” the book responds to her for the first time. Far away, Elphaba looks back toward Oz, sharing the song from afar as she continues her journey through the desert with Fiyero.

Chu makes it clear that the film leaves one major question unanswered: does Glinda now possess Elphaba’s magic, or did her own actions unlock something within her? “Elphaba giving Glinda the book is her saying ‘You know the power that you have, and you know the truth,’” he explained. But whether Glinda chooses to embrace that power, or what she will use it for, remains unknown.

The movie closes with Glinda bathed in the glow of the Grimmerie, and Elphaba and Fiyero stepping into a future free from the expectations that once trapped them.

Wicked: For Good is now playing in theaters.
