‘Wicked: For Good’ Sets Sights on This 2025 Box Office Record
“Wicked” is back on the big screen with its second film, “Wicked: For Good,” and it’s expected to have a huge opening weekend.
Industry estimates suggest that “Wicked: For Good” could earn between $150 million and $180 million in its first weekend from 4,000 theaters across North America.
If it hits the high end of that range, it would become the biggest opening of 2025 so far, surpassing April’s “A Minecraft Movie” with $162 million and May’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake at $146 million.
The first “Wicked” film made $112.5 million during the same pre-Thanksgiving weekend, setting a record for stage-to-screen adaptations.
Universal, the studio behind the films, has given a slightly lower estimate for the second installment at $125 million or more. “Projections for the first film were lofty — with some exhibitors suggesting above $130 million — before ticket sales floated to a still-spectacular $112.5 million,” sources say.
Experts are confident the sequel will do well because audiences already know the story and the second film promises to conclude the journey of Elphaba and Glinda.
While “Wicked: For Good” dominates expectations, two other new releases are hitting theaters this weekend. Sony’s action thriller “Sisu: Road to Revenge” is aiming for $3 million from 2,100 locations, following the path of the 2022 original which opened with $3.3 million. Searchlight’s dramedy “Rental Family” stars Brendan Fraser as an actor who takes small stand-in jobs for strangers in Japan. The film is expected to earn in the low single digits from 1,900 theaters.
